History

Mamfe, the capital of Manyu division, has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. The name “Mamfe” originated from the Bayangi language, spoken by the local community. Legend has it that when German explorers arrived in the area via the Cross River, they encountered a local man carrying sand from the shore. Attempting to communicate, the Germans asked him where they were. The man, not understanding their language, responded in his dialect, “Mamfie fah?” meaning “Where should I put it?”. The Germans mistook this phrase for the name of the area and thus, Mamfe was born.

Demographics: A Melting Pot of Cultures

Mamfe is a city with a diverse and vibrant population. The native inhabitants of Mamfe speak the Bayang language, specifically the Nyang dialect, as their mother tongue. However, English serves as the official language, alongside Pidgin and various other dialects such as Ejagham. As of January 2023, separatist fighters stormed Mamfe, setting a Total petrol station ablaze. These events highlight the complexities that exist alongside Mamfe’s beauty and resilience.

As of the 2017 estimate, Mamfe is home to approximately 36,500 residents.
