Split Mumbai/South

[edit]

I have redefined all the districts of Mumbai along the wards/zones of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and as of this writing, Mumbai/South is too crowded with listings (see: 43, do: 8 13, buy: 25, eat: 47, drink: 12, sleep: 12), especially the See and Eat sections. So, I think the district should be split into the following:

  • Mumbai/Fort-Colaba — covering the Fort and Colaba areas (defined with BMC Ward A)
  • Mumbai/South — the remainder of the district (defined with BMC Wards B, C and D)

While I'm not familiar with Mumbai at all, it's in general good to start thinking about dividing cities into districts (and splitting and subdividing district articles further) when one or several sections have 30 or more listings. So yes, go ahead and split it, if possible so that both articles retain usable status (Get in information, at least one See, Eat and Sleep). Ypsilon (talk) 18:37, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your input. I'm going to draft the proposed district so that the splitting is not abrupt. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 18:43, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Once the drafting at User:Sbb1413/Fort, Colaba and Churchgate is complete, it will be moved to mainspace as Mumbai/Fort, Colaba and Churchgate and the static map in the main article will also be updated. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 17:13, 12 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Update: Considering that the Churchgate area lies along the Marine Drive, for the sake of better coverage I have decided to put it under Mumbai/South instead of in the new district. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 18:18, 6 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Reverting the split

[edit]

I have again redefined the WV districts of Mumbai largely based on BMC wards/zones, with the sole exception being South Mumbai + Colaba-Fort. Also, South Mumbai and Colaba-Fort is going to be remerged, as the split is not consistent with how "South Mumbai" is actually used, which always covers the Colaba and Fort areas. The remerged South Mumbai would have following number of listings:

  • See: 10+28 = 38
  • Do: 13+8 = 21
  • Buy: 3+15 = 18
  • Eat: 8+34 = 42
  • Drink: 3+9 = 12
  • Sleep: 6+6 = 12

It seems like the See and Eat listings would get overcrowded with this merge, but the Eat listings are already overcrowded with Mumbai/Colaba and Fort anyway. Plus the See listings can be manageable with location-wise subsections. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 10:41, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have withdrawn the proposal to revert the split. Instead, I have decided to shrink the "Colaba-Fort" district by putting Colaba under Mumbai/South instead, thus remaining only the Fort area, the old business district of Mumbai built on the former Fort St George. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 06:06, 9 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Expansion to cover adjacent cities/suburbs

[edit]

Map of Mumbai

I have decided to expand Mumbai to cover adjacent cities/suburbs in North Konkan, and there are a couple of reasons for this:

  • Better metropolitan coverage: some of the things mentioned in this article may also be applicable to adjacent cities like Thane, Navi Mumbai and others, considering their seamless connectivity with Mumbai.
  • Better coverage of clusters of cities: I currently have Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath for the northeastern suburbs of Mumbai. Instead, "Northeastern Suburbs" under Mumbai makes more sense to cover the area.
  • The traveller comes first: Travellers may stay at a budget hotel in Thane or Navi Mumbai while exploring Mumbai to save costs.

So, the additional districts would be:

Plus, an extra Sanjay Gandhi National Park district will be carved out of Mumbai/North and Thane. The colour scheme is kept as it is for backwards compatibility. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 02:56, 9 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Are these suburbs commonly thought of as part of Mumbai by area residents, including residents of Mumbai proper? There are different situations in different places. Los Angeles is normally not restricted to the City of L.A. in people's minds, but instead includes independent cities that are within L.A. County. Adjacent areas of Maryland and Virginia are commonly talked about as parts of D.C. even though they are not in terms of jurisdiction or voting. However, people from outside the New York City limits who claim to be from New York City are laughed at by New Yorkers, who actually live within city limits. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:27, 9 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's the big problem, as those areas are covered under "Mumbai news", yet not always thought of as parts of the city. The main reason to include those areas in my coverage is the dreadful Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath article, which along with Badlapur covers a contiguous urban area, and it is easier for travellers to confuse which one is Kalyan, which one is Ulhasnagar, etc., although not always for locals. So, I have decided of making the area as a suburban district of Mumbai instead. But since I thought that the city coverage would be contiguous, I proposed to include the cities in between as well. Now, I found that Paris only includes the La Défense part of the outer metro area (Banlieue) as a district, and the rest as separate cities. So, I now propose for consolidating Kalyan-Dombivli-Ulhasnagar-Ambernath-Badlapur into Mumbai/Northeast only, with Vasai-Virar, Thane and Navi Mumbai remaining as separate cities under North Konkan. As far as I'm concerned, you should do what you think best, but I appreciate the notices on talk pages, and maybe you should wait a day or two to give others the opportunity to comment if they choose to do so. Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:28, 9 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have withdrawn this proposal, as I have restricted the coverage of Mumbai to cover only the municipal limits, except the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which covers both Borivali (Mumbai) and Thane sides. Plus, I have split the Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath into individual municipalities under North Konkan instead of combining them all with Mumbai.
