Region of Africa
[edit]South Sudan is not actually in the Sahel. It is full of lush forests/jungle and would seem geographically best placed in Central Africa in our hierarchy, but what do others think? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 20:24, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- Agree.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:35, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- I agree it looks best there based on climate and geography, but what about culturally? They are going to retain strong economic ties to Sudan for the foreseeable future, but I don't know how culturally tied they are. (WT-en) LtPowers 20:47, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- By the way, I just stuck it in the Sahel for the time being. I'm ready to update the maps when we make a decision on where it should go. (WT-en) LtPowers 20:48, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- Excellent. Unless you want to I will do the South Sudan Region map when we decide on that (see below). I also did the original maps for a number of the surrounding countries and can update those quite quickly. Uganda done already.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:18, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- Agree. Its not Sahel anymore (it was never Sahel anyway but it was there being part of Sudan). Also, is Sudan the largest african country anymore? Perhaps Algeria is the largest now. (WT-en) WindowsNT 18:08, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
- Yup, the scales of trivia have been overturned, and it's now 1) Algeria, 2) DPRC, 3) Sudan. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 10:23, 10 July 2011 (EDT)
- Somebody has changed the BC and South Sudan is now part of Central Africa. Given the comments above, I guess that is OK? Peter, Central Africa is one of your maps... any chance you could update it? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:53, 17 July 2011 (EDT)
- Done. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:23, 17 July 2011 (EDT)
- Any chances that someone with mapmaking skills could also fix the map for Sahel by greying South Sudan out? – (WT-en) Vidimian 21:25, 21 July 2011 (EDT)
- Have been meaning to tackle that - done.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:39, 22 July 2011 (EDT)
- I just finished up the last of the neighboring country maps and world maps, so we've officially beat Google in updating to reflect the new political reality... --(WT-en) Peter Talk 19:57, 22 July 2011 (EDT)
- Tremendous :). I thought I still had Chad to update until realising that it does not in fact share a border with South Sudan. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:34, 23 July 2011 (EDT)
This should be changed to East Africa, South Sudan has very little contact with Central Africa, but far more linkages to Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia. --Soman (talk) 23:54, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- True.
- But I suspect that it is User:LtPowers that you will need to convince of the realities on the ground. --W. Frankemailtalk 01:07, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
- Me? Why? LtPowers (talk) 01:57, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Regions
[edit]We will need to give some thought to this. Clearly, the 10 states currently shown as regions is far too many. The 3 historic provinces as shown here would seem to be a convenient region split? --(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:43, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- Ten isn't really too many if that's the most convenient way to do it. (WT-en) LtPowers 20:48, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- It is compared to neighbouring countries with a far greater tourism profile and relatively huge content (eg Uganda and Kenya). The three sub-divisions as per the WP article I linked seems far more appropriate.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 21:21, 8 July 2011 (EDT)
- Since the 3 subdivisions still use the borders of the ten within them, I'd say using the 3 would be best, since there is very little content for this nation right now and the tourism industry is highly underdeveloped. I don't imagine it gaining very much content anytime soon. If it does, though, it will be easy to divide it again in the future with the 10. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:15, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
- Voicing support here for the three region idea. Is anyone working on a map, or can I sign up for the job? (I was just planning to just do a quickie based on the existing Sudan map.) --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:35, 18 July 2011 (EDT)
- I was about to start using the UN Sudan map paths. Happy for you to do it though Peter.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:52, 18 July 2011 (EDT)
- Done. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 11:17, 24 July 2011 (EDT)
Stronger and clearer warning needed?
[edit]Given the events the past few days, I would say the warning needs to be stronger than "visiting Juba and South Sudan is not recommended." Andrewssi2 (talk) 07:40, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Did it end up happening?
[edit]"Overland crossing from Sudan to South Sudan was closed from the latter's secession in 2011; Sudanese leaders have announced plans to re-open the border in 2016.[1]"
It's 2021 now, did it happen? SHB2000 (talk) 23:09, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
