To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here.
Thanks for all your edits in articles about Antarctica!

Multiple emails
[edit]Thanks for all your contributions to Space-related travel destinations lately. Just a quick note on proper formatting with emails - there should be a comma between each one, otherwise a hidden error is generated. Parentheses vs. text is fine either way. Thanks, ARR8 (talk | contribs) 17:15, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- Oh, so that's how you do it. It should be in a policy and guidelines page. Thank you! Then what about the problem with the phone and fax numbers? SmileKat40 (talk) 17:18, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- I had just changed it but it didn't work...? SmileKat40 (talk) 17:20, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- You're right, seems to be a bug. Every instance of multiple emails is affected. For now, and for the phone/fax numbers, I'd say stick with the commas and parenthesis. Once the underlying template is fixed, it should display correctly. ARR8 (talk | contribs) 17:27, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
- As said in the pub, this is now fixed (for the record). ARR8 (talk | contribs) 17:53, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Autopatroller
[edit]You look to me like a good autopatroller candidate — see Wikivoyage:Autopatroller for a more detailed explanation about the role of autopatrollers. This role takes no work and no time on your part, but makes work easier for administrators.
I'm just writing this here to make sure you are OK with having the position, and perhaps another confirmation or two from other admins would be helpful also. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:03, 4 July 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, I'd like to be an autopatroller. The SmileKat40! (*Meow* chat with me! | What did I do?) 01:21, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry, I've responded a little late. I'll add your autopatroller status. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:22, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

User:SmileKat40 was blocked
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
According to the user's email to me, the block was through an IP address block. Was this an accident? Thanks. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:41, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
- @SmileKat40, SelfieCity: Since SmileKat40 is a user in good standing, I've given them temporary IP block exempt status for one month, to give us time to figure out what went wrong here. If necessary, the IP block exemption can be extended. SmileKat40, if you are still unable to edit, please send me or SelfieCity an email to let us know. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:46, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
- SmileKat40 reports that they are still blocked, that the problem is likely to resolve itself in the near future, but it would still be good for us to figure out the source of the problem in order to avoid it affecting other users in the future.
- @SmileKat40: More information would be helpful in figuring this out. Can you send me your IP address (which you can find by going to a website such as https://whatismyipaddress.com/ ) and the error message, block log, etc. that Wikivoyage gives you when you try to edit? Please also let me know if you'd prefer for me to keep the information private or if I can post it here so others can help figure this out. —Granger (talk · contribs) 01:22, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- Well, seems like I'm able to edit again! SmileKat40 (talk) 02:39, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- Glad to hear it! Maybe the IP block exemption took a few hours to take effect for some reason. I'd still be interested to know what your IP address is, if you're willing to reveal it. —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:02, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- My IP address is in a hotel at Shenzhen and it is 65.49.123.19. SmileKat40 (talk) 03:13, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- (I hate to call attention to this, but it might or might not explain the unintentional block, which I denied existed because when I checked SmileKat40's status, I saw that they had never been blocked. But I guess the block history shows only intentional blocks.) Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:04, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- Possible, but I suspect that may be coincidence. The IP address SmileKat40 mentioned has been globally blocked as a proxy and geolocates to the United States. Maybe the hotel uses it to allow guests to bypass the Chinese firewall, or maybe SmileKat40 had a VPN or similar software activated on their computer.
- Coincidentally, I'm in Shenzhen right now too (though I'm leaving the city for a trip soon). —Granger (talk · contribs) 09:07, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- And I'm also leaving the city tomorrow to Guangzhou. I have a VPN app on my computer. SmileKat40 (talk) 12:27, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
- Just so you know, most IP addresses used by VPNs are globally blocked on Wikimedia Foundation wikis. Your IP block exemption should take care of any problems with that for now, but it expires in a month. So if you're planning to be in mainland China editing with a VPN for longer than a month, let me or another admin know and we can extend the exemption. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:24, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

- I had a problem with a global IP block when I was travelling in New Zealand six months ago. At the time I was using a UK 3 phone to create a WiFi hotspot. I got a different IP address when I restarted the phone and the problem didn't recurr. I did find an explanation somewhere of the address being blocked, and who had blocked it, but I am not sure if I still have the details. AlasdairW (talk) 20:21, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Lost phrases
[edit]It seems the Aymara and Tongan phrasebooks lost phrases when you added standard phrases, in Aymara the numbers, months and "day", in Tongan "welcome", "10,000" and "100,000". Did I miss something?
For the big numbers, as Tongan seems to have specific words for those, they are probably worth including even if they are not in the template. Generally, I would strongly advise against removing phrases unless you know the language and culture enough to know they are not needed.
--LPfi (talk) 10:00, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- For whatever reason, I didn't notice the phrases that were already in the Aymara phrasebook. I will fix that right now, and thanks for telling me about that. For Tongan, I'll restore "10,000" and "100,000" For "welcome", I'm not sure if that's for welcoming a guest or as a response to "thank you", so I deleted it. SmileKat40 (talk) 10:05, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. --LPfi (talk) 08:23, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
