Welcome to Wikivoyage
[edit]
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.
If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.
If you are a Wikipedian, or have previously used Wikipedia, then you may notice some differences in the style of our articles. These include:
- "Village pump" → travellers' pub
- "be bold" → plunge forward
- "sandbox" → graffiti wall
- "stub notes" → Article status notes
- "External links" → We do not use a separate external links section, but incorporate primary links only into the text itself.
Thank you for your contributions. - Tom Holland (Xltel) (talk) 21:24, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
UserMerge
[edit]Hi, let me know if you would like your old account contributions merged into your new one. I'd just need confirmation that you are the same person by stating so on your WT user page. --Peter Talk 23:43, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Banners
[edit]Hi AlasdairW, I have just noticed you were the one who added the banner to the Lochranza article. This banner was subsequently tagged with the {{crop}} template, because its proportions majorly deviated from the 7:1 standard we agreed to use. I have cropped and resized the banner since, you can see the effects going to said article. Feel free to make another, more suitable banner should you be less than impressed with my quick creation, just keep it 7:1 (which is 2100x300, for reference sake).
I see that you are an experience Wikivoyage contributor, but I guess you may want to visit the Wikivoyage:Banner Expedition for more tips and guidelines on adding banners, to make sure your banners are state-of-the-art. I am looking forward to your upcoming contributions (and banners!) and will be happy to help if needed. Kind regards, PrinceGloria (talk) 13:51, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Your Lochranza banner looks great. Thanks also to Peter (Southwood) for editing West Highland Way. I had been meaning to edit these but never got round to it. As I am not used to editing images and uploading to Commons, I figured that this would take a couple of hours and was something for a wet weekend. AlasdairW (talk) 20:33, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your contributions to our Nelson (England) article. As I write this, adding a banner removes our standard table of contents (ToC) and instead displays a limited function ToC that offers no ability for readers to access tertiary and quaternary headings directly.
- Since I am planning to expand this article greatly in the coming weeks (you will see that I have already expanded it greatly from the original skeleton), I'm wondering if you can self-revert your edit today until such time (hopefully less than a month now) as our banners have fixed this castrated ToC? Thank you in advance for your anticipated co-operation, Alasdair.
- PS: You're very welcome to drop by for a wee dram. -W. Franke-mailtalk 19:13, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
- Frank I have undone my edit and a later one by Nicholasjf21 to remove the (England). I added the banner in part because the TOC was causing a large blank space in the climate section. This may be a feature of the browser - it looks better in Chrome than Firefox. I am surprised that you are going to spend more time on this article! AlasdairW (talk) 23:05, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Alasdair! One of the excellent reasons to introduce the horizontal banner and ToC was to fix these sort of display anomalies with different browsers and screen sizes. I hope that in a few weeks, the banner display will be much improved and it can then be re-instated.
- There's actually a hell of a lot of listings still to do -particularly in the transport and eat sections.
- Thanks again for your collegiate spirit and please don't hesitate to pop the banner back in when the technical guys have put the drop down ToC expansion into operation. Do you think that the automatically generated numbered icons are a bit too large in the numbered map display? --W. Franke-mailtalk 23:38, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Copying text from Wikipedia
[edit]Hi, Alasdair. I noticed you copied extensively from w:Providenciales in the Providenciales guide. I think that's a bad idea because, even if you duly credit the Wikipedia article (which you did), the more similar Wikivoyage's articles are to articles on other sites, the lower the search results will be on Google. So for that reason, I've reverted your edits. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:24, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Just to add: It's fine to paraphrase the Wikipedia article; just please don't make it to similar in wording to the original. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:25, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- While I agree with you that copying to lead sections won't increase the search results for Wikivoyage articles but filling the other sections of the articles might increase their ranking. On the other hand, we're not copying the text not under a compatible license, so I don't think we need to paraphrase it. I should say that text should be paraphrased to make our content distinguish from others but for time being, it should allowed until someone willing to paraphrase it. Moreover, filled articles look good. --Saqib (talk) 14:31, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Feel free to revert my edit if you think it's better to have the content be there in the meantime, but let's not forget to edit it soon. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:36, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'll leave it up to Alasdair. But I would say lets take some advantage of CC licenses and not be so perk. --Saqib (talk) 14:39, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- I copied a few paras from WP, only making small changes in that process, with the idea of coming back later and doing some rewording, after doing some research elsewhere. If an edit is not a serous problem, it may be better to wait a few hours before leaping in. I will probably leave any further edits to Providenciales until tomorrow, as I have some other things to do. AlasdairW (talk) 14:50, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Alasdair, please feel free to copy content from WP. --Saqib (talk) 15:00, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

- Alasdair, please feel free to copy content from WP. --Saqib (talk) 15:00, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Alasdair. I'd strongly recommend that you copy any of the threatened articles to your userspace (e.g., User:AlasdairW/Sandbox while you edit them to try to rescue them from deletion, if you don't want your work to disappear. I'm speaking, for example, of the Singles travel and Two weeks in New Zealand's South Island topics.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:21, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I have made local pdf copies, and am not bothered in the case of these two articles, as I only spent a few minutes on the edits. Is there a copy process that retains the history? AlasdairW (talk) 22:56, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- It is certainly technically possible to undelete deleted articles, but this seldom happens, and short of that, the articles' histories are deleted along with the articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:46, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- I think I misunderstood your question. You can request to have the articles in question moved to your userspace in case of a determination to delete, instead of their being deleted. If they are moved to your userspace that way, the histories will be retained. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:48, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- But if you want to make the request in Vfd, do it as quickly as possible, because these articles, along with your work, could be deleted at any moment. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:27, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- Since there was no answer, I went ahead and put the page in question at User:AlasdairW/Two weeks in New Zealand's South Island. If you don't want it, let me know, and I'll delete it. Texugo (talk) 15:46, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I didn't feel that strongly about Two weeks in New Zealand's South Island to make the request, but I am happy to look after it. It might really become a personal itinerary if I go back to the South Island. However I don't want Singles travel. AlasdairW (talk) 20:57, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

merges
[edit]Hi! I've been spending time resolving articles tagged for merging lately, so could I request that you update Lundin Links to provide an explanation of why a merge should be done in the {{merge}} tag (example: {{merge|target|per [[some discussion]]}}
)? That way it's clear that the merge proposal is based on an existing Wikivoyage policy or discussion - many of our articles tagged for merging lacked such justification, making it difficult to determine if a merge was really the right solution. Thanks! -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
go next
[edit]has been a bug bear for me, in that in the indonesian articles, small essays have been made of each item which should be one liners, the problem is I have been trying to separate the one liners wherew I find them into directions
the problem for me is the category tree you have just added doesnt give the reader an option to know where the next place is in relation to the place the go next is in. I certainly wouldnt put galashiels or jedburgh in kirk yetholm, as kelso comes before... and so on - any thoughts?
it is really great to see a set of borders towns being mewntioned, that is great, it is just i would like the option to spearate into direction from each location if it was at all possible -cheers JarrahTree (talk) 22:21, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
- I have tried using category tree as a quick way of putting something in places with empty Go next sections. I realise that this is inferior to a properly composed list giving directions, and details of what is in a place, but I think that it is better than nothing, and is a quick one line edit. I also find that it is occasionally worth looking at categories to see if there are any "hidden cities" which are not listed on the region article.
- I think that a basic list of places in the same region is useful to readers, and could have SEO benefits too. An alternative that I have seen on German WV is a link to a map with the destination layer selected - I did try this on The Lothians, but haven't used this elsewhere.
- I would be interested in your thoughts on either of these, or whether it is better to just manually put in the nearest place.AlasdairW (talk) 00:35, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- my problem is skeleton articles in australian and indonesian contexts, i think manually is probably what is needed, for where there are better articles to link to, the lothian map is absolutely brilliant - imho - better quality articles for that sort of linking!
just my point of view though, category tree for closer places in tighter geographical scope areas, is fine. I suppose the distances between places in some australian contexts are vast compared to parts of Indonesia and Scotland, and thats where I'd prefer manually between skeleton articles. The Falkland Islands were actually my first contributions to Wikivoyage over a decade ago, so it's been nice to see those articles getting a refresh - I was particularly happy to see your edit noting that Kay McCallum's is apparently still in business. Thanks for your work on those articles, and nice work tracking down info about an area that isn't the easiest place to research online. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:37, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. Strictly I was using May 2014 information from a British Army guide to update McCallum's. I agree that online info on the islands is scarce, but this may make updates here more useful. AlasdairW (talk) 22:05, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

No booking agencies please
[edit]Hi Alasdair, I respect your oponion but I think that's a bad idea and we can include Caledonian Way in the paragraph: "Other resources". The agency is a business based in Edinburgh and a company legally constituted like Super Mums Childcare Agency (paragraph: Babysitting). kind regards (Added at 02:52, 26 December 2016 by Edinside).
- Thank you for explaining your view. See Wikivoyage:External_links. In "What not to link to" it lists: "Hotel or travel booking services or aggregators". It appears that this is what your business is, albeit for the specialised area of language schools. I looked at a translation of your page, and it appeared to have language schools like those we already have listed. Super Mums is a different situation, as the babysitters that it provides are individuals who won't have their own booking websites. If you were offering individual tutors that will come to a hotel room, then it would be similar to Super Mums.
- Secondly this is the English Wikivoyage, and the linked page is only in Spanish. Please use the English version of your page - the Spanish version possible belongs on Spanish Wikivoyage - check the policies there to see if your business is allowed. If you wish to try again, please present your case on Talk:Edinburgh first. AlasdairW (talk) 10:55, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

- I hope you don't mind my interjecting. First, please sign your name on talk pages (only) by typing 4 tildes in a row at the end of each post. But second, are you suggesting that you don't accept that aggregators cannot be listed on this site per site policy? You don't have to like a policy to accept its existence. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:47, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
It's ok. I will remove the other Spanish link too. Thanks. —The preceding comment was added by Edinside (talk • contribs)

Deletion policy
[edit]Alasdair, thank you for your contribution to finding a solution to that problem. I'm prepared to implement it now, but I think that you should, for attribution purposes, be the one to create that Airlines article that will be the target for the redirects using your draft page. I'll take care of the rest. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 15:14, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- I have put the content on Airlines which was an existing redirect to Flying. It may need some tweaking. AlasdairW (talk) 22:16, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Are you really against the merger or did you just revert because "proper protocol" was not followed? In general putting the merge template on top of an article only results in the template sitting there for weeks and then being forgotten. If you think the merge was a mistake, this is of course a legitimate standpoint, but if you are just reverting this because the merge was done without the template being put up for weeks, I think you should reconsider. Nothing personal. Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:56, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- I did it in part because I was irritated that somebody would do a merger only a few hours after I had done several edits to the article. I also thought that the reason given in the edit summary was wrong as I had seen that there was a hotel there when I was looking yesterday. I did not see enough about the Hotel Al Cacciatore to add a listing, and it may have closed. I am also not sure which is the "more famous" of the two villages - which should be merged into which. AlasdairW (talk) 22:17, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, I can see the reasoning. I also found the hotel in my search but determined it had ceased existing and withheld listing it for that reason. At any rate, the merge template is a very insufficient way to get a discussion going in the vast majority of the cases, as few people ever participate in those debates. I have mulled over this problem in my head several times but have not yet reached a satisfactory conclusion. What do you think would be the best way to have merge discussions other than the unsatisfactory way it currently goes? Hobbitschuster (talk) 22:41, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- I am the person who did the merge. I'm sorry I irritated you with this, that was not my intention.
- I have been going through a lot of the Switzerland articles and there are a lot of article of very small hamlets without any accommodation. In the past I've started discussions on merging those (see for instance Talk:Finhaut) and found that I rarely ever get answers at all, even after a couple weeks, which is frustrating and slows any progress. Of course I should have started a discussion nevertheless, as you just edited the article. I missed that and I apologise for that.
- Going forward, I started a discussion at Talk:Lostallo on this. I still think merging Lostallo into Soazza might not be the right option, as after searching I couldn't find any accommodation with confirmed information, but of course I would appreciate your input on this subject. Drat70 (talk) 03:17, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Beccles vs Bungay Wikipedia & Commons links
[edit]Thanks for that. From a Wikipedia & Commons perspective they are different enough to be considered separately. But from a travel perspective neither is big enough on their own and they are generally considered together so with only one link available I agree Beccles is the larger of the two. I set the geo to be mid way between the two (no idea if this is the correct thing to do). I've no idea if combining both to a single destination page (on WV) was the right thing to do but seemed a bit OTT to have go for lots of rather feeble/empty pages for every little place around PsamatheM (talk) 19:19, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- Your welcome PsamatheM. We did have some discussions a while back about having multiple Wikipedia links in cases like Beccles and Bungay, but I think these stalled, as the main change at the time was adding Wikipedia and Commons fields to listings. It is good to see a new article for these towns. AlasdairW (talk) 22:25, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Following up on a suggestion made on Talk:History of justice, this was started in User Space, because my knowledge of political history outside the UK is somewhat limited.
As you commented in the talk page mentioned, your contribution much appreciated. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:21, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Carlisle
[edit]Hi Alasdair, you reverted me on Carlisle airport. The Telegraph article mentioned Loganair, but that airline's own web page doesn't acknowledge it, and I think it's wishful thinking / corporate bull. Not much population base to serve there and Flybe and Ryanair the two obvious alternative operators are retrenching. Great to list it if there's something more solid (ie tickets open for booking) but even if so, MAN should remain listed for its excellent selection of flights and good direct transport to Carlisle. Grahamsands (talk) 22:08, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- Graham. I saw your edit earlier this evening then I read "Let's Visit Penrith" in today's Telegraph which says that flights may happen this spring. However I see that w:Carlisle Lake District Airport says June 2018. As we probably won't notice when the airlines do start selling tickets, it is worth keeping the listing, but saying "no commercial flights" until things are clearer. I have listed Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow as alternatives. Thanks for you hard work on this any many other articles. AlasdairW (talk) 22:25, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
Banner for Water safety
[edit]Thanks for adding this banner! But please follow the steps explained on the Category:Banner Missing from Wikidata page so the pagebanner is included on Wikidata as well.
Don't worry, I had to learn how to do this quite recently myself. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Notice how it was done at d:Q17130379. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 14:14, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I think that some our other banner pages may need updating as I hadn't realised that we now had detailed instructions. In the case of the recent banners for travel topics, I would ideally have waited a week or two before adding then to Wikidata, as it is possible that those that know the topic better may decide that my banner is no good. Incidently, the Water safety banner was a "spare" that had been created for Larne, but not used - it would be great to have a way of finding these spare banners easily. AlasdairW (talk) 21:33, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- I see; but don't worry, the banner is fine. I'd say that per Plunge forward there's nothing wrong with going ahead and adding the banner to Wikidata at the first. If someone wants to change a banner, they can quite easily change the Wikidata pagebanner themselves. But thanks for the consideration! --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:30, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Page Banner Completion
[edit]Hi! Thanks for creating so many page banners and helping to reduce the number of articles without custom page banners.
I am wondering though if you would follow-up by adding the banners to Wikidata? For each banner that you create, I have had to follow-up and complete this work for you. All of the articles that don't have their page banner added to Wikidata remain in the Wikivoyage maintenance category of Category:Banner missing from Wikidata. The top part of the page has the instructions on how to properly add the banner to Wikidata, and at the bottom is a list of articles that need this action. While the instructions may look lengthy, after you do this a couple of times it goes very quickly. Thanks for considering my request. It can be challenging to keep up with all of the banners that are being added each week. Zcarstvnz (talk) 10:06, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for being so quick in adding my banners. I have added a few banners to Wikidata, then I found that I couldn't add one because the page was semi-protected. I am planning to go back and add the recent banners to Wikidata, but I think that it would be easier to do several at once. I don't see any hurry in adding the banners to Wikidata - it doesn't matter if there is a one month delay before the banner is available for another language. AlasdairW (talk) 10:48, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Personally, I think there would be less confusion if you added the banner to Wikivoyage, the category to Commons, and the page banner to Wikidata all at the same time. Then, it's clear that every banner you've uploaded to Wikivoyage is also in the Wikidata. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:35, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Now that I am back home, using my desktop, I have just added about 15 page banners to Wikidata. I found that it was a lot easier to do with a large screen and a mouse than it would have been in the last few days using my laptop when I way away. AlasdairW (talk) 18:38, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Good news, thanks! --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:22, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I was being lazy in not checking, but I did not change the meaning of the sentence by removing "currently". It meant the same after the change as it did before. Ground Zero (talk) 22:09, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
- I think that "currently" is a hint that the information is likely to change. Maybe in the case of renovations this is obvious, and it would have been better if the original edit had given an expected end date. AlasdairW (talk) 22:38, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
- I would read "currently" as being emphasis that the information is current, which it wasn't. I agree with providing date information instead unclear and obsolescent terms like "currently". Ground Zero (talk) 00:39, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

- Thanks. I would be OK with this. However I am unlikely to spend much time looking at recent changes - the changes I do review are mainly those that appear in my watchlist. As I am travelling at the moment, it would be best to wait until next week before making any changes. AlasdairW (talk) 20:44, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Don't worry — you can patrol as you wish. Additionally, by being a patroller, you can rollback edits, which is easier than undoing them. That makes handling vandalism easier. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 20:57, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

What license is File:NewTownEdinburghBannerMorayPlace.JPG licensed under? GreenComputer (talk) 23:15, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- I have added the CC3 template to the file, as this is the licence I used on another photo that I uploaded 5 minutes earlier. AlasdairW (talk) 23:44, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

York - Sleep
[edit]Hi Alasdair. I assume you've now checked 'Budget' as well, so thank you. Is there any reason not to mark all of the remaining sleep listings as updated? I've got a bit of time now, so can do it.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:39, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- I have now checked all the sleep listings, but I didn't mark the listings as updated. It was only a quick check, mainly looking for Covid related closures and night have missed other changes. I added a general statement about hostels, rather than check the details for each place. In many ways Sleep is a less important section to check, as I assume that anybody looking to stay would book in advance. AlasdairW (talk) 21:37, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

WikiVoyage - Westport edits
[edit]HI AlasdairW, thank you for taking a look at the article I was passionately updating yesterday! I see you commented that phone numbers need country codes. I wonder why you think that? The country code for all of NZ is +64, and any traveler coming here would know that. But, more than that, travelers will have purchased a SIM card and will have an NZ phone number more likely than not. I'm currently residing in the area, having traveled from the U.S. in February for a 6-week holiday, and for such an extended visit I had purchased a SIM card for local calls. Do you still think a country code in front of every phone number is needed? Thanks for considering my thoughts.--PDXMaria (talk) 19:26, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Someone just pointed out to me that the calls may be made from those out-of-country, so yes it doesn't hurt to have the +64 on every single solitary number. ;) --PDXMaria (talk) 19:47, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- @PDXMaria: It's Wikivoyage standard to write phone numbers with the country code included, please see Wikivoyage:Phone numbers. --Ypsilon (talk) 20:23, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- @PDXMaria: If you were still using a US sim, you would need to use the +64 country code, even if you were standing in Westport. Note that the +64 replaces the local long distance access code of 0. Thank you for the good work on Westport - I passed trough there in December, but didn't stop - I now know that there would be enough to justify a stop next time. AlasdairW (talk) 21:29, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- I've gotten a lot smarter in just 8 days of being on Wiki! Thanks for contributing to my learning process. --PDXMaria (talk) 22:01, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
WikiVoyage "icon" for tourism websites
[edit]Hi AlasdairW... as Mike Dickison and I were chatting when he was here in Westport this past week, he had a suggestion. He suggested that now that I have the Westport page fairly well done (still working on it, though), a next step might be to go to local businesses and get them to put the WikiVoyage link on their websites for Westport. That's a good idea, but then I thought why not have a WikiVoyage icon, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and put that icon that serves as the link to WikiVoyage - preferably the icon could be "linked" to the local WikiVoyage site. I don't have the skills to create it, but wonder first what you think of that idea? And if you like it do you know someone who could create it and popularize it? --PDXMaria (talk) 21:59, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- @PDXMaria: Thanks for your good work on Westport. I like the idea of asking local businesses to link to Wikivoyage. I don't think that an icon is the best approach: icons work for Facebook or Twitter because most readers are familiar with those sites, and the content being linked to is generally written by the business - a restaurant may put the regular menu on its website and tweet a daily special. Instead they could just put a link to the Westpost page, maybe calling it "Westport visitor guide from Wikivoyage". If you have more questions about this, it might be good to ask on the pub page, as others may have experience in speaking to businesses. AlasdairW (talk) 22:39, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi there
[edit]Just to take the time to high-five you for all the geo tweaks and overall contributions to our precious online travel guide. Geo accuracy is the way to go. I wish I was smarter about the codes and templates, as to be more of efficient use here, and am always in awe of you guys that can really program the bloody thing. High-ten now. Wikivoyage is the best. Ibaman (talk) 22:37, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. Much of what I add geo wise come from looking at the Mapnik version of the map as a full screen - it is surprising how many listings are marked on the map. Searching for info on WP can also be useful, as just adding the Wikidata item number often results in lat/longs being available. AlasdairW (talk) 22:45, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- I find Wikidata presently very unreliable and inaccurate; I tend to check things out, and marking accurate coords, on Google Maps. Exactly today, as I was proofreading some Brazilian articles, I had to substitute geo for inaccurate Wikidata several times. Let's keep tweaking. Ibaman (talk) 22:55, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
thank you
[edit]Hi AlasdairW
Thanks for your comment at Talk:COVID-19_pandemic#Fines_imposed_in_some_jurisdictions_for_breaking_covid_rules?, and especially thanks for providing the link to the article about the $5,000 fine. I used it to add information to another wmf-wiki where I participate on a more regular basis.
btw I don't know if you have a template on this wiki for unsigned comments (you forgot to sign there). Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:20, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- I am glad it was of interest. I don't know what happened with the signature, as somehow it saved the timestamp but not the name - it should be fixed now. AlasdairW (talk) 17:53, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
Hampshire
[edit]You sure seem to know a lot about Hampshire, have you considered becoming a Docent? --82.3.185.12 10:41, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- It is a long time since I have visited Hampshire. I just decided to spend a few hours doing updates on the articles in one county. AlasdairW (talk) 10:53, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Capitalised mL
[edit]Hi, I noticed you recently reverted this edit. According to this policy, the letter L must always be capitalised when it stands for litre (e.g. mL). 82.3.185.12 17:46, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Special:Diff/4319400 (re revert on Oundle)
[edit]The reason why I rollbacked that edit was because that IP is the infamous "Brendan John Williams" (aka the Telstra vandal) as block evasion. It's likely copied from another source without attribution, including from "All rights reserved" sites. So if possible, can you copyedit that if you're willing to keep it? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:19, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. Interestingly the first sentence of Understand now matches travel about Britain and other sites, after my edits to adjust the phrasing. I expanded Understand using the WP article for info. I will edit it further. AlasdairW (talk) 13:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks :) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 20:39, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the article. However, FYI, the problem was not the listing template but the Module:Map at line 217. When the WD entity doesn't exist (or when it has been deleted like the one of the article) the variable "e" is nil and "e.claims" cause the LUA error.
Since after the implementation of Module:marker, this one won't be used anymore, I avoided to spent time on properly fix the module. --Andyrom75 (talk) 23:54, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for investigating and thanks also for improving module:marker. AlasdairW (talk) 20:25, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Revert by mistake
[edit]Hello.
Apologies for this inconvenience. I can't believe how easy it is to revert in mobile version without even noticing it and how hard it is to undo oneself with the edit summary "sorry - a slip of the finger". Vidimian (talk) 21:13, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, don't worry about it. Thanks for letting me know. AlasdairW (talk) 22:03, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
