To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. If you want to contribute with information about the place where you live, see Wikivoyage:Welcome, locals.
Thanks a lot for adding more information to the Montepulciano article!
All the best,

Thanks for the welcome and all the work you put into this wiki. Use it often on my travels. Thought I should make an account to help out with edits.

- Much appreciated! That's what this site is all about: travellers helping other travellers! Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:07, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- Excellent work on Loikaw. You've certainly made that article a strong Usable, not far off Guide status! --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 22:45, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! Probably won't have in-depth knowledge of the place enough to make it Guide status. Thuegh (talk) 07:51, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Fair enough; you can only do what you can do.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:41, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Default address information
[edit]Hi there, and thank you so much for adding so much content! Just a small matter of Wikivoyage style here: We leave out default address information in listings as a matter of course. In the Tokyo/Shinbashi article, that would apparently be Shinbashi, Minato-ku, unless Shinbashi is also the name of a street. Or perhaps I misunderstood and haven't looked at enough addresses in the article, in which case, please ignore this example. In the U.S., we leave out the name of the city if it's the same as the subject of the article, and also the state and zip code in Wikivoyage listings.
All the best,

- I think the naming convention for addresses usually include the district. Otherwise it becomes just a string of numbers like 1-25-2. Unless the Japan style guide is to not include the districts? I didn't see a preferred formatting style on the main Japan discussion page. I've been formatting the addresses similar to how I see some of the other articles. I can definitely take out the Minato-ku though. Thuegh (talk) 15:43, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. That seems like default information, given that that article is just about that district. User:Ground Zero is the formatting king hereabouts, I guess. GZ, do you have an opinion about whether to include districts in Japanese district guides, or whether a few numbers without a district name is sufficient as an address? It does look a little funny to have only numbers. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:25, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Other thing to consider that I saw in this article is that some of these listings are actually slightly outside this area in Atago district. There isn't a separate article for that district, so I left them in since it's close enough. If it's just a string of numbers, those Atago listings would confuse people since it wouldn't be clear if it's Shinbashi or Atago. I also see for larger ward level articles that we include the district addresses, which makes sense there. Thuegh (talk) 16:31, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Definitely agreed on including Atago in listings and including district addresses when those are needed to disambiguate. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:42, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- [Edit conflict] I had to refresh my memory on how Japanese addresses work, which I learned after spending 14 hours flying from Queenstown NZ and arriving Osaka trying to find an Airbnb at 11:00 at night without GPS as I didn't have a SIM card yet. In the fricking rain. Even local people couldn't help us find it. Japan says: "Addresses are usually written in English as "Meieki 4-5-6", where Meieki is the ward, 4 is the chome, 5 is the block, and 6 indicates that it was the sixth building built on the block. I would side with Thuegh on this for a number of reasons:
- 1. Our articles dont always line up with the wards, so in a lot of them, the ward will be a necessary part of the address,
- 2. "4-5-6" on its own looks like a typo,
- 3. Japanese addresses are imponderable to non-Japanese people, so let's err on the side of clarity.
