Coverage about FIFA World Cup and host cities

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

In yesterday's NARWHAL (North American Regional Wiki Hub and Lab) meeting, it was mentioned that since there will be high volume of travellers in summer 2026 to attend the FIFA World Cup, it's suggested that Wikivoyage to improve and translate the contents of 2026 FIFA World Cup page and the 16 host cities in all Wikivoyage languages. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:03, 9 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if we could turn that into an editing event. Maybe for the birthday celebration? WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:02, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was going to say this, too. Out of the 16 cities, SF is a star, Seattle, Guadalajara, Boston, NYC and Vancouver are guide articles, while LA, Houston, Kansas City, Mexico City, Monterrey, Atlanta, Miami, Philly, Toronto and Dallas are only usable. Maybe it would be good if we can get some of those usable articles up to guide as a goal we can work towards for an editing event. //shb (t | c | m) 00:10, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I'm not clear on this, but @WhatamIdoing: what do you mean by the birthday celebration? When would that be? --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 05:33, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Work on the city pages will have lasting value, while the event will come and go. Perhaps the most urgent for WV-EN are host cities for English-speaking overseas fans, as they will be looking for accommodation and related travel info right now. Three that leap out are Foxborough Mass, Arlington (Texas) and East Rutherford NJ. Grahamsands (talk) 16:02, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wikivoyage's birthday is in January. We have sometimes tried to run a banner to encourage other (e.g., Wikipedia) editors to contribute here. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:54, 10 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
We can push for an improvement drive on FIFA host cities and event to start on February 1 once Wikivoyage Asian Month wraps up. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:21, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

How should city articles deal with World Cup?

[edit]

I think it might be useful to add something to the articles for each city that is hosting World Cup matches. I took a stab at this for Monterrey, adding some tips geared toward the games. Do y'all think this is useful? If so, where should it go and how should it be presented? Comments appreciated. Mrkstvns (talk) 18:37, 16 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Ikan Kekek Your contribution could be helpful Globetrotter30 (talk) 15:26, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Should I just change that to a disclaimer box, shorter and snappier on each city Globetrotter30 (talk) 15:27, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Mrkstvns, I hadn't seen this thread and posted this to User talk:Globetrotter30:
"Did you decide to add those on your own? I'm not sure why we want to add a brief summary just for World Cup fans. I could see having summaries with links from a dedicated World Cup 2026 page, but I don't like them being in destination articles. Please discuss."
So that's my opinion. If we believe introductory summaries are useful in destination articles, they should be presented without reference to fans of any specific World Cup or other event that happens in the area infrequently, and otherwise, it could be reasonable to put them in this article, with suitable links. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:31, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I added it back in February and attempted to open a discussion here, although, as you can see, nobody has commented on it up until today. My thought is that this is an important event that will likely attract some new readers to our site and that the most likely place those visitors will land is on the Destination page for the host site. Since we've been burying info in a labyrinth of district articles for most large cities, a succinct summary of navigating relevant info is probably useful for a first-time visitors (especially one with no experience with local geography). I tried to include only focused info on the stadium location and the best places to stay and eat relative to the stadiums. All thoughts or alternative ways of presenting info for World Cup fans are very welcome. Glad to have some input on this!Mrkstvns (talk) 15:46, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you think that would be more useful to a traveler, then go ahead and change it. Mrkstvns (talk) 15:32, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
There are dozens of these things now, and since I didn't put them in articles, I don't think it's really fair to say "You don't like it, you deal with it". I am practicing up for a very challenging 4-day recording session and can't overtax my hands and arms. Would moving them all here be reasonable? How much of the content belongs as introductions to x or y sections of the destination articles where they were placed? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:36, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would be better to put them here, but I feel a short infobox could be better. Globetrotter30 (talk) 15:38, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Will revert my edits...
Though I feel a short infobox would be helpful on each article.
Thanks, Globetrotter30 (talk) 15:37, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Some of that content might be useful to put in briefer form in "Get in", "Get around" and other sections if it's not already there. In destination articles, we should think about the needs of all travelers. And what about the idea of moving the blurbs here? Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:39, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that would be better Globetrotter30 (talk) 15:39, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Let's get some more views, though. It's not urgent to do anything. Do you have any more thoughts, @Mrkstvns? Pinging also other people who have edited this article: @~2026-20174-61, @SHB2000, @OhanaUnited, @SelfieCity, @Ground Zero. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:44, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think an infobox on each city's destination page could work fine. Would like to see what Globetrotter30 is thinking... Mrkstvns (talk) 15:49, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It might be even more useful to hear some comments from folks who know the individual host cities. Mrkstvns (talk) 15:50, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't think the kind of info that I've included in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey belong on the overall page for the 2026 FIFA World Cup because the info is purely local to the destination and irrelevant for general fans who might be attending a match in another host city. Mrkstvns (talk) 15:53, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
BTW: My intent is to remove the info after the World Cup is finished. Mrkstvns (talk) 15:55, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I support an infobox or a one-paragraph "Welcome World Cup Fans" section that calls out specific venues or any special one-time events, perhaps with a link to an official FIFA schedule page. I don't like the general "places to stay", "places to eat", etc. summaries - shouldn't that already be clear from the rest of the article? (And if it isn't, shouldn't we fix the article instead?) Gerode (talk) 16:17, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it's much better to summarize as useful for visitors in general, as Gerode says. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:18, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Although the added info looks very event specific. Advice to take a taxi because the stadium neighbourhood isn't good for pedestrians, accommodation near the stadium etc. Everything general should be in the normal sections, but I believe this specific info is valuable for the "cup fans". –LPfi (talk) 16:23, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, the info that's really specific for just them could be put in a much shortened section or infobox for them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:27, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I plan to add Toronto FIFA Fan Festival info and I think it's more appropriate to go into this World Cup page rather than the city page. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:30, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Like others, I too think an infobox is the best way to handle it, mainly because it does grab your attention to say the very least. //shb (t | c | m) 22:44, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree that districted city articles can be hard to navigate. I hope most readers interested in the cup will find this article and use links from here for the navigation: "Guadalajara (event info)"?. The info could then be placed as a subsection of Events (or as an infobox) on the main city page. Those coming for other reasons primarily need a warning about accommodation scarcity and busy traffic, for which a short notice early in the article might be warranted. I think the sections put into the articles look good content-wise, but they are out of our normal practice placement-wise. –LPfi (talk) 16:19, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stay safe

Isn't a lot of this content Captain Obvious? Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:17, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
