South Sudan template fix
[edit]Thanks for fixing South Sudan and adding back the header and sub-headers. For some reason I thought I was editing a Region article. I should have looked closer. Thanks! - Xltel (talk) 16:06, 24 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]Hi, thanks for welcoming me. But can I improve this site by adding pictures from Wikimedia Commons? Is that okay for you? Thanks! --Katarighe (talk) 06:06, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, that is OK. However, please see Wikivoyage:Cleanup. Wikivoyage is a new website taking the contents from the website Wikitravel. Part of the transition is using Wikimedia Commons for images. There are many images that have not been transferred to Wikimedia Commons yet and are just red links. Please don't change any images on Wikivoyage that are red links because the image used has not been transferred to Wikimedia Commons yet. AHeneen (talk) 06:14, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for your explanation! --Katarighe (Talk) 06:16, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
S Pole of Inaccessibility
[edit]Hey, I saw your addition to South Pole regarding the Southern Pole of Inaccessibility, and wanted to suggest moving most of the information to East Antarctica (that's where that information has been), and then moving the remaining information down to Go next. --Peter Talk 17:40, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- Unrelated, but as one of our resident Floridians, would you have any advice to give at Talk:Miami#Districts? --Peter Talk 17:48, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- If you look at the "Understand" section, it explains the various possible meanings of South Pole, with a modest description. I added the text to the East Antarctica page, but the description of the magnetic/geomagnetic poles & POI seem like reasonable content for the page unless it's renamed "South Pole (Geographic)". As for putting it in "go next", there's really no way to reach other parts of interior Antarctica from the South Pole...any trip to the POI would leave from a station along the coast.
- Unfortunately, I don't know much about Miami. Only been there three times...going to the airport w/no stops, returning from the airport, and a half-day trip. After Miami, the Orlando area really needs a new/good hierarchy and districts put in place, including a page for Greater Orlando with a good map for the numerous attractions (plus hotels & restaurants) that officially lie outside the city limits, but advertise, consider themselves, or are associated with "Orlando". The hotel listings are a popular spam target and require cutting out lots of them (to keep from getting too long) that don't have a lot of info...it would be really great to move that stuff to district pages. I've nominated it for Collaboration of the month with a really good explaination of what needs to be done and problems with the Orlando page are discussed briefly on its talk page. I've put forth a proposal for districts in Tampa at Talk:Tampa and the city could use a good map, if you are willing and/or have spare time. AHeneen (talk) 21:50, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Request for Vfd comment
[edit]I was hoping to reach a consensus on Talk:Requested articles, but I guess that's not happening, so please have a look at Vfd and weigh in. I hope this doesn't sound harsh (I don't mean it to), but I believe that an article requesting for someone else to start other articles is entirely unnecessary. All the best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:59, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
A quick hello and a request for assistance
[edit]Hi AHeneen -
From the exchanges we've had on the Destination of the month candidates page, I noticed that you tend to look at things with a critical eye and play devil's advocate when necessary. (That's a sincere compliment, btw, not a backhanded one; IMO your approach is the best one for improving the quality of material on a site like ours.)
So I wonder if you might look over this Buffalo district article that I've been working on, and share your thoughts. What would you add (other than a map, which is forthcoming soon), what would you leave out, etc. I'm shooting for eventual Star status, so a critical eye like yours would be valuable.
I've had LtPowers and Peter help me in the past with previous issues like this, and I'm sure they're sick of me bothering them about this stuff by now. :)

- No problem. I'll try to take a look when this whole surge of new users/contributions winds down. AHeneen (talk) 19:14, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Ugh, don't get me started on that... :) -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 19:24, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Archiving
[edit]Why are sections of Traveller's Pub being archived to my talk page? Surely they should be preserved in normal archives. Snowolf How can I help? 23:41, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- Discussions from the pub are usually swept to the appropriate talk page rather than the general archive. I thought the talk page for Snowbot would be the appropriate place for that discussion. However, I now realize it was a redirect to your talk page. I'll move it to the archives then, sorry. AHeneen (talk) 23:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- That's a very bizarre archiving system, but if that is the custom, feel free to move it to my talk page :) Snowolf How can I help? 23:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]"The St. Emillion page was moved to Saint-Émilion, because that's the official spelling. Abbreviating it as just "St." is not preferable since the name is hyphenated. Despite the move, St. Emillion will remain as a redirect page to Saint-Émilion."

[edit]Thanks for the welcome. But I have been very active on Wikitravel in the past. See my User Page. Just been a bit lazy recently, that's all! Roundtheworld (talk) 17:57, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. I can get that up as soon as I get a free minute today (I teach geography in Texas). I am very new to wikivoyage, and wikiediting in general, so I appreciate any advice, tips, or suggestions I can get. MrLewis (talk) 14:10, 22 January 2013 (UTC)MrLewis
Interwiki link request for wikioverland
[edit]Hi AHeneen, On Wikivoyage_talk:Cooperating_with_Wikioverland you and others mentioned you would support interwiki links to WikiOverland. Do you know how or where I can request WikiOverland be added to the list of related sites so interwiki links can be added in places that make sense (Country and "drive.." pages, I think) Thanks very much. -Dangrec (talk) 20:49, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't, unfortunately. It might be best to just write something in the Pub. AHeneen (talk) 21:51, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. Will do -Dangrec (talk) 22:43, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Re: A quick hello and a request for assistance
[edit]- "Where's 'Get around'? The 'Get in' is somewhat muddled between information about getting into the district (By public transportation) and getting around (by bike & by foot), with 'By car' being a mix of both."
- When I was writing Buffalo/Downtown, I originally had both a "Get in" and "Get around" section, but Peter later advised me to condense them into one "Get in" section. That's the template I followed for Buffalo/Allentown and the Delaware District as well. However, after reading your comment, I'm now leaning toward separating them out again. They do seem muddled.
- "The buy section has a lot of listings & I don't think all of them are really necessary for travellers (tattoos & piercings, ACE hardware)"
- Agreed about ACE Hardware (added mostly to make the Delaware District subsection of "Buy" at least somewhat comparable in length to Allentown), but I did see tattoo and piercing parlors listed in some of the Chicago district articles.
- "In 'Contact', is there a public library with (free) wi-fi?"
- In point of fact, there are no public libraries in this district at all.
- "This might be difficult to fix right now, but some of the photos should be taken in spring/summer so they don't look so drab."
- Agreed—and yes, difficult to fix right now. I wanted to include photographs that would represent all the different seasons Buffalo sees, but I think you're right that winter is overrepresented. Most of the photos I've used on this site have been recycled from a non-Wikivoyage writing project I'm working on, but the balance have to be taken specifically for the articles, and it so happened I wrote this article in the winter. In fact, I purposely waited for an unseasonably warm day to take "Linwood bike lanes.JPG", "MillionairesRow.JPG", "ArlingtonPark.jpg", and "AllenStreetNightlife.jpg", but unfortunately there was still a bit of snow on the ground here and there. I predict that these district articles won't "go live" until well after the end of winter, so I will definitely look at retaking some of the pictures.
Thanks for your help! It is much appreciated.

- No problem. Sorry I took a while to get around to doing this. It was just too hectic around the launch and I've been recuperating from WV burnout the last few days. AHeneen (talk) 17:56, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Demotion to admin

Hi, my bot (User:Hoo User Page Bot) will never touch enwikivoyage again (just like it never touched enwikinews the only other wiki that doesn't allow it to run without flag n:en:Special:Contributions/Hoo_User_Page_Bot). I'm not going to file a local approval request as I simply don't have the time to keep track of that. It would be nice if you could unblock it just for the record though. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 03:03, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Your recent work
[edit]The Original Barnstar | ||
To complement your recent demotion to admin, I'd like to award you this barnstar for your amazing work on various Florida articles, most notably Polk City which I just saw in the Recent Changes. Also for your excellent contributions to policy discussions. Happy editing! JamesA >talk 06:26, 15 February 2013 (UTC) PS - I think we should enable the WikiLove extension here so that people spread appreciation more often :) |
- Thanks! It's mostly just edits to my home county—Polk County (Florida) (oddly enough, I've worked on the city pages & this page is still at outline!)—not the state in general. I'm hoping to eventually get it to guide status and featured as OtBP (Checklist: User:AHeneen/Polk County).

- I don't know. I looked at the last 4-5 days of the log and the rate of new accounts created does not unusual. I don't see how this is a problem unless these accounts are used for a surge of vandalism/spamming. We can deal with any potential problem when it occurs. AHeneen (talk) 14:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Reunion
[edit]Regarding the discussion that we had here, you can also take a loot at the Italian article where I have already set up the regions. I just need the map. Thanks for your availability. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:23, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, any news about the map? Let me know how is it proceeding. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:24, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- I have been busy and have had limited internet access in the last couple of weeks. I have made a very nice topographical map in QGIS and have used Openstreetmap data to create a map of everything else (roads, motorways, park/region boundaries, and towns) in Illustrator. Now I need to merge the two maps, add templates (water, park), add labels, and clean up some things. I have honestly spent about 20-25 hours or so during the last month searching for freely available content (maps and elevation data with a Creative Commons license or in the public domain), and then learning how to use software which I haven't used before. There have been a lot of issues with file formats. I only have 12 days left of the free trial of Adobe Illustrator (it's over $600!!! Not something I can afford!!), so hopefully I will be able to finish the map soon. Sorry. AHeneen (talk) 02:55, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Have you found a "cheap" way to complete the map? :-) --Andyrom75 (talk) 19:02, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- Have you abandoned the map? --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:18, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
- Please give me a feedback about it, because if you have given up with this map, maybe it can be reassigned to someone else. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 06:58, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

MCO Maps
[edit]I didn't realize you were working on a map for MCO. I'd taken SVGs from OSM and had been mulling over how best to utilize them, but I hadn't gotten around to modifying them yet; now I'm glad I hadn't yet.
The map area you picked is good, though I'd been considering expanding to include SR417 (Greeneway), as it's the major route to get to WDW from the airport. I intend to make a terminal map at some point, and I've also been considering an overview map that goes west as far as WDW and north to downtown Orlando to show the routes to and from major destinations (the problem with that being that the OSM-exported SVG is too big to edit on my computer).
But I don't want to duplicate effort if you're already working on these. =) And I fear three maps may be too much; the large-scale map may be best as part of the Orlando or Orange County (Florida) or East Central Florida articles.
-- LtPowers (talk) 14:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- I initially wanted to create a map that extended down to SR417. However, such a map would be very tall and the terminal and facilities around it would be much smaller (and thus harder to discern). The current map originally extended a bit further south (so all runways were completely visible), but there was still a lot of empty space begging to be removed. I will add to the map boxes which indicate destinations reached by the Beachline & South Access Rd...ie. "To Kissimmee, Jct [I-4 sign], & Walt Disney World via [SR 417 sign]."; "To Space Coast & Jct [SR 417 sign] (East Orlando, Sanford)."; and "To International Dr, Convention Center, Universal Orlando, & Jct [I-4 sign]."
- I considered creating a locator map, showing a simple map of Orlando highways with suburbs labeled, but the quality of the National Atlas road map for the Orlando area is very poor. I ultimately figured there is no need for such a map, since the location of MCO should be indicated on an Orlando map. I could not manage to download a file of Orlando from OSM to create an Orlando-area map. It would simply be too big of a file to work with (even at a scale of several million...anything at a greater resolution was rejected by OSM as being too large an area). I downloaded the .osm file for Florida from a mirror site...it's over 2GB when unzipped!!!!
- I intend to start a discussion over at Wikivoyage talk:Airport Expedition regarding the necessary maps once I have created a few examples. I'm thinking MCO needs two more maps:
- A map of the terminal with two frames: 1) A closer view of the terminal and surrounding parking & roads and 2)a map of the terminal building (similar to this) color-coded for sides A & B and with ticketing locations (A,B,C...) identified (a table of airlines & their ticketing locations would be placed in the article.
- A map with four frames: one for each airside with gates, restaurants, shops, & restrooms identified.
- How does that sound? OIA website has good info & ok maps to glean this kind of information from. AHeneen (talk) 02:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- I agree, though it will be hard to make a map of the landside terminal interior without copying existing maps. I'm admittedly not sold on the need for a zoomed-in exterior map; the confusing nest of multilayer one-way roads and drives doesn't make much sense from overhead, and it's almost impossible to intuit which exit you need to take even if you know which direction you want to go. Drivers are better off following the signs than trying to navigate via map. LtPowers (talk) 15:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
There are some current discussions here that you might like to participate in since I saw you earlier made this comment there: "I've gone ahead and fixed Cartagena (Colombia). It was/still is a nightmare as far as MoS is concerned. I mainly focused just on fixing the prices. All now use "$" and a period instead of comma to separate 1000s (since this is what's used on official Colombian tourism website for prices). I think I saw at least C$#, $C#, COP $#, COP #, $# pesos, # pesos, # COP, # Colombian pesos forms used and on top of that, half used a period, half used a comma, and some used nothing to separate 1000s. Other Colombian pages are similarly messed up."
Our current policy, of course, specifies using a comma rather than a full stop for the "thousands separator" (radix?): Wikivoyage:Currency#Decimal --W. Franke-mailtalk 16:09, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
- Since there were no further comments or opposition, I've gone ahead and made the changes I outlined some weeks ago at Wikivoyage_talk:Currency#Growing_like_topsy. My next proposal is to change the page to this format: User:W. Frank/$2 so that the advice is clearer and easier to understand both for newbies and at a quick glance.
- I was very interested in the changes you just made to your biographical details on your user page, Alexander, many Americans have lost touch with their family and ancestors and, as a foundling myself I obviously know nothing about my forebears! --W. Franke-mailtalk 13:50, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Hi! I hope you are fine. Ikan and i work currently a lot on Dakar because i nominated it for DotM. I remember you have interest in the francophone Africa and hope you can help. The main issue are addresses for the Eat/Drink part sections. There is lot going on but it is not easy to find them. As you are experienced in such things, it would be terrific if you could help. Best regards, jan (talk) 10:59, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'm ok. Addresses can sometimes be chaotic in W.Africa. I checked a couple guidebooks and they don't have any remarks about the address system (eg. for some major cities in the region, addresses have only recently been introduced and few people know their way around using addresses). I'll try to help with the article. AHeneen (talk) 01:31, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Flying to Africa
[edit]Hi, I felt that the Flying section for Africa was too detailed and too long, and so decided to remove as per the talk discussion. (The level of detail meant it was very long, especially compared to the other continent articles).
However seeing as you seem to have put quite effort into this, I have used the content in a new article Flying_to_Africa, which is now linked from Africa.
I hope this is OK with you? Thanks, Andrewssi2 (talk) 13:16, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Maps template-en.svg
[edit]Hi AHeneen
I saw that you have updated this file Maps template-en.
I'm also working on that file as the code of it IS NOT valid to W3 xml. There is a lot of ID names which I have edited so it's now valid.
Also the font I have changed to open ones of Liberation Sans.
- Is there a specific reason for you to choose DejaVu Sans Condensed as this gives problems on Ubuntu? I have installed the extra but still it doesn't work.
- Could we not go with Liberation Sans as that one also works on wikimedia svg fonts and has less variations that can cause problems. Or at least not use the condensed DejaVu Sans, just plain.
I mostly work on commons. --Goran tek-en (talk) 10:12, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
- Andrew hasn't been around in a while, so I hope he doesn't mind if I step in here. DejaVu Sans was chosen because we were previously using Bitstream Vera, and the DejaVu family are an expanded version of those fonts. Other than that, and being a free font that the Wikimedia renderer could handle, I don't think there was any other reason, really. I doubt anyone was aware that it had problems on Ubuntu. Our map guidelines strongly recommend that font, but it could be changed if it's important, and if the two fonts are sufficiently similar. Powers (talk) 02:19, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, I don't mind the reply. Goran tek-en was referring to an issue on Commons, where I realized my user page had "Active on Wikivoyage" and so the user must have thought that this would be the best place to get my attention. The file in question is actually the Wikipedia map template. The template (which uses Arial & Times New Romans) was created by Wikipedia-Fr and I noticed that the French version of the map template was different (and more recent) so I had translated it. Administrator status
[edit]Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.
As such, we have removed your administrator flag as of 2020-03-02. If you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.
If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.
