    Hello, PerryPlanet! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub.

You also might want to read cross-identification of accounts. --Globe-trotter (talk) 00:49, 6 October 2012 (CEST)

Welcome back to the community. Your mop and bucket are waiting for you (i.e., I have enabled your administrator privileges). LtPowers (talk) 05:06, 6 October 2012 (CEST)
PerryPlanet, it's great to see you here, and doing good edits, as usual! Just one point of style: External links should not be front-linked, such as you did for attractions in the "Pittsburgh Region" section of "Get out" in the Pittsburgh article. Please have a look here for standard format for external links: [1]. All the best, (WV-en) Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:58, 12 October 2012 (CEST)

New Mexico Pueblos map & nomination

    [edit]

Hey John, I made a map for your New Mexico Pueblos article, and nominated it for dotm! How does the map look? --Peter Talk 04:44, 1 November 2012 (CET)

    [edit]

Hey, Perry. You might want to consider leaving in the WTP stuff -- at least some of it. At some point we'll be needing to find a way to designate certain material as unprintworthy, and retaining the established signifiers in articles that had WTP editions could be useful to that end. Re: Portland, Oregon

    [edit]

I responded on my talk page. I'd love to see some editors work on the Portland, Oregon page and ideally have it promoted to quality status. If you have other thoughts, feel free to post here, on my talk page, or on the Portland discussion page. --Another Believer (talk) 00:42, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Re:Singapore nomination

    [edit]

Hi PerryPlanet. Thanks for your message. Wow, I'm amazed of the progress at that page. It's definitely in a much better shape. I guess it's a reminder to us all that our standards change over the years, but also that we need to continue to improve star articles, and not declare them untouchable beacons of greatness. I withdrew my nom. All the best, JamesA >talk 10:07, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Finger Lakes

    [edit]

I see you took the plunge and color-coded the subregions of Finger Lakes. I appreciate the help, and I especially appreciate your care in getting the borders correct! However, I have a couple of concerns.

First, I was never really sure how to handle the colors (which is why it hadn't been done previously). Intellectually, I still liked the idea of using the same colors from the New York (state) map for the regions' maps, as you can see in the three I've done: Niagara Frontier in blue, Southern Tier in yellow, Finger Lakes in red. As a result, I'd been thinking about making the colors variations on that red/pink hue, much like Peter's evocative Ireland map is all shades of green. The colors you chose (apparently from the NY map) work well enough, but I was wondering what you thought of my old idea?

Second, the text sizes seem to have increased significantly in the new version of the map; was that intentional, or did something go wonky?

    -- LtPowers (talk) 19:57, 30 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I look forward to seeing what you come up with (not least so I can replicate it on Niagara Frontier!). LtPowers (talk) 20:08, 30 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think it works fairly well. Nice work on the apple-red for Apple Country. =) The font size is smaller but still larger than before; I may go in and try to tweak it but I don't see any major problems that require immediate correction. Thanks again for the help! LtPowers (talk) 20:49, 30 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Antelope Valley

    [edit]

Hi. I've been working on the Antelope Valley page and noticed you removed two listings from the Towns section (Lake Hughes and Lake Elizabeth). Was just curious about the reasoning behind it. Do they not fit with some aspect of WikiVoyage? (Just trying to learn how to make this project better.) Thanks. Wrk3 (talk) 18:40, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

    UserMerge

    [edit]

Hey, I just noticed that your old WT account contributions were never merged into your WV account. Would you like me to do that now? --Peter Talk 07:47, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Done! I was surprised to see the few long-timers who had forgotten about this ;) I put your old talk page (and archives) at User talk:PerryPlanet/Archive. Maybe you might want to move the archive links to your current talk page. Your user page is still available too (in the history of the redirect), if you want to use anything from it. --Peter Talk 07:54, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Removal of routeboxes from Los Angeles

    [edit]

I think your removal of routeboxes from Los Angeles was in error. New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, and other big cities whose articles are broken up into neighborhoods have them, so why not L.A.? The routeboxes in L.A. are reserved for routes that leave the county, so I'm not seeing a compelling reason not to have them, nor for that matter am I seeing a compelling reason to have Buttonwillow and Camarillo link to Los Angeles/Downtown rather than just Los Angeles. I haven't reverted you back yet, just thought I'd tell you why I did what I did first. Purplebackpack89 22:45, 10 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Great that you're cleaning up the Las Vegas article and adding geo coordinates to the establishments. I've planned to do it myself since Christmas but always had some lazy excuses not to :P. BTW do you happen to know if The Quad is still a construction site like it was a year ago? If they're done, then we should update the description. ϒpsilon (talk) 19:00, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

They were demolished. Terminal 6 was taken out a few years back, and Terminal 3 was removed about a year ago. The airport just hasn't bothered to re-name the remaining terminals. PerryPlanet (talk) 20:11, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Hi, User:PerryPlanet!

I notice you've been doing a lot of editing on the Seattle article and district articles for that city. Are you trying to get it in shape for a dotm nomination? I think that would be great!

    [edit]

Hi, Perry. Can I prevail upon you to upload File:Disneyland hub banner.jpg locally, with Template:Non-free image attached? Since the Partners statue is under copyright, I think the banner will have to be deleted from Commons. Powers (talk) 19:29, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

    [edit]

Hi, It doesn't really make that much sense to not have interWMF links in an article? I saw that there is a proposal for changing this, but it has stalled. Can you explain as to why Wikivoyage is so against interwiki linking, because it's pretty stupid, as people trying to learn more about something they find on Wikivoyage are hindered because of this. --TJH2018talk 23:08, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Images in the Central Park guide

    [edit]

It took a considerable amount of time for me to find the images to illustrate the article and I am VERY frustrated you decided to delete them at whim just a moment later and due to your other edits I cannot even revert. I would rather you talked that over on the Talk page if there is an active editor involved.

I also believe that the images overflowing is not a good sign but to me it means there isn't enough content and my plan was to add it further on (I work on the Dallas and Manhattan guides this month ahead of my trip to the US). We also agreed no to force sizes and leave it up to user settings to determine how they display, it would be good to stick to that. PrinceGloria (talk) 18:26, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Side point here, but who agreed never to "force sizes" of pics? It's often a good idea to make the lede image bigger, and some images are tiny or huge at regular thumbnail sizes. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:56, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I need to dig out this discussion, but we've certainly had it. I used to force image sizes myself. It is NEVER a good idea actually, as somebody pointed out to me, and then I realized when I once used a low screen resolution to view VW on a tablet. PrinceGloria (talk) 20:21, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the last time this was brought up, there was a lengthy discussion on one of our image policy pages about how the default image size is too small. PerryPlanet (talk) 20:33, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

    Ride hailing??

    [edit]

I've never heard the term "ride-hailing" before. What are all these media that are using it now? The media I read still use "ridesharing". Powers (talk) 20:18, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, thanks for mentioning this. To me, you hail a cab by waving your arms on the street. I don't think of getting an Uber online as "hailing". My feeling is that it might take a little while for this newfangled expression to get greater currency, much as happened with "texting" vs. "sending a text" and many other terms that were at first either young people's slang or techno-speak. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:04, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Powers and Ikan Kekek — The Associated Press has specifically instructed media outlets to use the terms "ride-hailing" or "ride-booking" instead of "ridesharing", and if you look at the respective Wikipedia article you'll notice they avoid using the word too. "Ridesharing" is a term that was born out of the hype over the concept of a "sharing economy", but it's a fundamentally misleading term; when you use Uber or Lyft you don't "share" a ride with anyone. Even the driver isn't really "sharing" anything—they're entering a contractual agreement and being paid for their service and the use of their vehicle.
If you guys are really bothered by the term "ride-hailing", you can remove it, that's fine. Just so long as we're not using the term "ridesharing", I'm happy. PerryPlanet (talk) 23:36, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't think removing the term is a good solution. Something clear has to be used. For the time being, is it necessary to briefly explain or at least give context such that readers understand what the term means? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:38, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan — For North Americans at least, I would think the mention of Uber should be sufficient, e.g. "ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft", since most Americans have some sort of sense of what Uber is, even if they haven't used it. Another possibility could be to simply fold any info on Uber/Lyft/etc. into taxi sections, since they really operate as cheap alternatives to taxis. PerryPlanet (talk) 23:46, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Probably most of our online readership has heard of Uber, but most of our online readership has also taken multiple flights, and yet we have an article for people taking their first flight. I'll trust you to deal with this in a clear way. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:51, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree, I'm not sure that's sufficient. "Ride-hailing" feels like a neologism to me. However inaccurate "ridesharing" may be, I'm fairly certain it's the most common term for what Uber and Lyft engage in. Powers (talk) 02:19, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

    [edit]

    Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

    Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

    Administrator status (official notice)

    [edit]
A similar message was also sent via email.

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on January 23, 2023. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Hi PerryPlanet. Your administrator status has now been revoked. I have reassigned you to the 'patroller' and 'autopatroller' groups, should you ever return to active Wikivoyaging.
