    Warsaw in One Day

    [edit]

Nice work! I've always felt that one thing our huge city articles are lacking is walking itineraries. To see how it might be improved further, maybe take a look at one of our star itineraries, especially Along the Magnificent Mile. --Peter Talk 18:38, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Peter! Great to hear you share my view on walking itineraries! I sure will improve it step-by-step. PrinceGloria (talk) 06:37, 30 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm a new user too and feel bad. I often start doing wiki-gnome tasks on wiki's and have slapped a merge template on your new article. Perhaps I should have been more cautious and gotten more familiar with the Wikivoyage culture first before designating content to be merged/purged. Although I do follow the reasoning in Wikivoyage:Itineraries (the part where it says itineraries like these are a bit too personal and hard to improve by others). In any case, people adding real content (like you) are worth a lot more than the gnomes, so I hope this hasn't discouraged you too much. --109.133.120.216 11:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nobody is worth more than anybody! But please DO LOG IN. And I do wholeheartedly disagree, btw the article is not "mine", this is how wiki works, doesn't it? PrinceGloria (talk) 18:02, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Liverpool banner

    [edit]

Fantastic choice of banner for Liverpool! That city truly has to have one of the best skylines in Europe. Keep up the good work, regards --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 14:41, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, but actually the kudos should go to Living OS at Flickr for the photo. I need to recrop the picture, as the headline text looks clumsy now and have it on my list for the coming days. Incidentally, I am just in the middle of planning my trip to LPL as I am writing this :D
Do let me know how I can help you with articles on LPL, MAN and other locations in the UK, or anyplace else you would like to collaborate on. Have you been to Poland lately? Perhaps we could work on articles about Poland as well! PrinceGloria (talk) 07:32, 9 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am actually looking for a decent banner for my university's city, Sheffield. Although it's a great place to live and study, it's not exactly a traditional tourist destination but perhaps a really great banner would help generate more interest! If you haven't been to Liverpool before, I'd strongly advise taking a warm coat as the constant wind blowing from the river Mersey can get very icy, even in summer. But I'm sure you'll have a great time, there's lots to see and do and the people are friendly!
I've only visited Poland once in 2009, for a school history trip. We stayed in Kraków, which I found to be a very beautiful city. I'll certainly take a look at some relevant articles to see if I could improve them, though I expect my input would be as limited as my stay in Poland was short. I'd love to return one day and also visit Warsaw to see the the magnificent Pałac Kultury i Nauki (though I had to look up the building's name online!) Best wishes --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 02:22, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
LOL @ "magnificent"... There is a flight from Doncaster/Sheffield to Warsaw by Wizzair for pennies, hurry up as it still lands in our "proper" airport, which is Warsaw Chopin, this summer as our equivalent to Luton (or worse), Warsaw Modlin, is still closed (and we do pray it will remain so forever and ever). Do let me know if you take the plunge and come on over!
Even if you don't know much about the destination, your advice on the contents, presentation and style of Kraków and Warsaw will be invaluable. Whenever you would find time to read them in whole or in part, do leave some notes on how they can be improved, what you did not find there and would want to know, or what was presented in a less than perfect way, in their talk pages. I am happy to look into Liverpool and Sheffield as well, I will see if I can come up with a reasonable banner for the latter. PrinceGloria (talk) 05:14, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well they say "familiarity breeds contempt", so maybe you've seen too much of the Palace! The Sheffield page banner's image quality is a bit rubbish because it's too low resolution to look good as a banner but the actual picture itself is quite impressive. It would be good to find a similar photo with higher resolution. If not, this photo wouldn't require much tinkering to be a banner. I've trawled through practically every Wikimedia photo of Sheffield and nothing jumped out at me at being particularly suitable for a banner. Next academic year I might try to get out a bit to see if I can take some decent ones for the Commons in general.

As for the Kraków page, I'd be more than happy to take a look at it and do a bit of spelling / grammar / stylistic copy-editing. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 20:10, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is it okay if the discussion in Talk:Netherlands is titled as something more neutral? Referring my name in the title, I think, makes it seem a bit like the person is important instead of the discussion itself. Thanks. Globe-trotter (talk) 22:28, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely, this I guess was not very fortunate of me to name it this way. Please change it to anything you may find appropriate. I am taking a wikibreak now and would not want to start editing other pages at this moment, as I would be too tempted to get back into some other stuff I need to distance myself from. Thanks! Times in Polish articles

    [edit]

I'm a bit puzzled as to the use of the 12 hour clock format in Polish articles. It's a while since I was in Poland, but when I was there I saw constructions like 10.00-18.30 rather than 10AM-6.30PM. Have things changed very recently?

I have lots of Polish neighbours and there are some Polish food shops here in Glasgow and they all use the 24 hour format and put the day of the month before the month rather than afterwards.

Hoping you can shed some light on this mystery... --W. Frankemailtalk 01:45, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

We use the 24h clock here, but the readers and editors of the English Wikipedia are probably more accustomed to the AM/PM format, which might explain why some entries use that. I might have been using either, I am absolutely not paying attention to that as I find that of the very least importance here, most users will understand either. Feel free to correct the articles and any of my edits if you care about standardizing those. PrinceGloria (talk) 10:25, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
I agree that it's a trivial point, but if we are to get some of the Polish articles up to Star status we do need to standardise. Since tdf currently states "Use one of these formats: 09:30–17:00 or 9:30AM–5PM. Do not use both 24- and 12-hour formats within one article. Choose between formats by following predominant local usage." ::Although the US has by far the most number of native English speakers there are another 70 countries that have English as either an official language or one that enjoys a special status. There are reputed to be another 2 billion (like you and I) that have some English fluency and now that we are a Wikimedia project I hope some of them will be reading and writing here. (I'll copy this conversation to Talk:Poland - just revert my edit if you don't agree...) --W. Frankemailtalk 14:37, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I find it too complicated and the discussion too advanced for me to be able to get involved at this point. Help me remember

    [edit]

At Talk:Paramaribo#.22Organized_tours.22_subsection_of_.22Get_around.22 we are discussing if it would be possible to combine a bunch of smaller places into one region article. As an example I mentioned the occasion a few months back where the content of a couple of Polish villages' articles with little content were merged into the voivodeship's article and the town articles themselves deleted. One of them was that place where the overgrown ruins of a manor was the only sight. Or was everything deleted? I can't remember the names of the places and which voivodeship article it was (most Polish region articles have more content than the average), but maybe you do? ϒpsilon (talk) 09:32, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Nowy Dwór Królewski, although in the end it was redirected to Chełmno, the powiat that includes the village. Discussion is archived at Talk:Kujawsko-Pomorskie. Hope this helps. PrinceGloria (talk) 09:46, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just FYI on leading Polish Catholics

    [edit]

I think it's fine for you to edit out stuff that you consider inessential for Wikivoyage, so no problem there, but just so you don't think my remarks were baseless ("nonsense"), I'm referring specifically to Polish cardinals who, in the immediate aftermath of the Kielce pogrom, blamed the Jews for the pogrom and suggested that the Blood Libel might be real. See w:Kielce pogrom#Reaction of the Catholic Church.

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:54, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

OK now, thanks for the clarification of what you meant. To me, this is the reaction of the catholic church, and/or rather catholic church officials, not "leading catholics". I was quite surprised at the mention of "leading catholics", as if the catholics (who were, and still are, a majority group in the Polish society) were led and represented by a certain leadership, which was not the case.
At any rate, antisemitism did manifest itself more or less dramatically until the 1970s (and, which needs to be said, was part of the official propaganda), and did cause further emigration of many of the surviving Polish Jews, which can help explain to a casual tourist why a country with the largest pre-war Jewish population and so full of Jewish heritage is now almost devoid of Jews (other than WW2, obviously). That said, I would not want to focus too much on particular events or highlights in any section of history we include in the article, as I believe this is just to help understand the background, not give a brief and incomplete history lesson to a tourist.
Wikipedia does a much better job of telling a complete, detailed and balanced history of every country, and it seems that in the case of Poland in particular we are halfway into trying to do their job while not having enough contributors - or space - to do it as well as Wikipedia. I do not have it on my list to get down to it right now, but I believe we could further prune down and edit this section to make it more concise and easily understandable for the casual tourist. PrinceGloria (talk) 05:44, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Understood. I'm sorry my language was confusing. I also think it's fine to prune the section, but I think the basic facts should remain there. Among other things, I think it's important for the visitor to know about Poland's history of being invaded and victimized by its neighbors, its history of heroic resistance, and the bare outlines of the important and checkered history of Jewish settlement in Poland - both Polish heroism in fighting for and hiding their Jewish countrymen/-women and the post-war pogroms and, as you mention, official anti-Semitism which explain why the Jews who survived Nazi terror, many of them with help from their Catholic neighbors, largely disappeared from the country after being so much a part of Polish history for hundreds of years. For what it's worth, I am of Polish-Jewish descent on my father's father's side, and one of my father's uncles was a middle-ranking Communist official who was expelled from his position and exiled to Sweden in the "anti-Zionist" purge in 1968 and, thereafter, lived off his pension which he picked up every month at the Polish Embassy in Stockholm for being a loyal Communist. Funny how they purged him and yet supported him, eh? I have yet to visit Poland myself, but would like to and probably will have the chance within the next couple of years or so. And for what it's worth, I'm from the democratic Socialist side of the family that always rejected Bolshevism. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:28, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
If you have not visited Poland yet, you absolutely should! Do let me know whenever you would be coming, I would love to meet you in person and show you around if you cared for that!
Meanwhile, I believe that Polish history is indeed fascinating, intricate, multi-faceted and controversial, but most other European countries do fine with a few paragraphs of text despite being nonetheless interesting. I appreciate the historic fascinations of the editors who might have enriched this section of the article on Poland, but I guess it becomes hard to realize we are reading a practical tour guide after your third paragraph on the Second World War... PrinceGloria (talk) 12:25, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Point well taken. And thanks for the offer. The place my girlfriend and I most want to visit in Poland is Krakow, not surprisingly, but my ancestors came from an apparently nondescript town near Plock. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:32, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Northern Mazovia may not be as prominentaly featured in traditional travel guides as Kraków (which is where we can make a difference), but it can nonetheless be quite beautiful and interesting. Płock itself is quite underestimated as a tourist destination - since there is no railway connection, do feel invited (both of you) to join me on a car trip from Warsaw to Płock, which I would gladly take myself as it's been some time since I've been there, whenever you would have the opportunity to visit. And obviously I'd love to prove to you that Warsaw is just as worthy of your interest as Kraków :D PrinceGloria (talk) 18:18, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot; that's a very generous offer. I'll definitely contact you if/when we have a chance to visit that part of Poland. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:11, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Added Paris Hotels

    [edit]

Have you stayed at the hotels you are adding to Paris? Seligne (talk) 15:46, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Oh God, not all of them - I am in Paris far more often than I'd like to (in fact I just booked two more trips last week...) and have stayed in surprisingly many hotels, but not THAT many. I am pulling from experiences of both myself and the people I know that I use to choose hotels there. As a last resort, I refer to the online reviews that I like to pour over when making a booking.
I believe for a city of almost 1000 hotels we provided preciously few listings, and few and far in between with selections that are rather strange, while omitting some of the most obvious choices. Wikivoyage is one of the few places where we can plot the locations of the hotels vs a pretty complete list of other POIs using the dynamic maps, so it can come very handy to somebody when choosing accommodation. I find it useful to have at least the most popular / best rated (in my unofficial private ranking or by external review sites) accommodation options listed to give readers the overview of the choices they have - and place them on the map to help them make an informed decision (I will update the latlongs for 17th hotels in due course).
The guidelines actually encourage us to fill in underserved sections with whatever data we find online, so I guess I am not doing anything wrong. I filled in data on many hotels in my home town as well, even if I have never stayed in a hotel there.
    Does this answer your question/concern? PrinceGloria (talk) 21:00, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ha ha! Not really a concern. I was just gobsmacked that you had perhaps stayed in such expensive hotels. And to your larger point, I think there is a lot we can do to improve the Paris article. And you are doing your bit. Seligne (talk) 04:07, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the kind words! Paris is gobsmackingly expensive in general, there is no way to do it cheap, and when you do your homework you may find that the "expensive" hotels can actually cost you not much more than the cheap ones. But I guess the latter works for every location. I am just very petty about my hotels, I like to stay at a nice one and it is an important part of every trip to me, so I am trying to cater to the queasy travellers like myself by filling in the "Sleep" section with my findings whenever I can.
The Paris article makes me cry as well, I just looked at the 8e and I cried. But I hope together we can bring it to a state of repair :) PrinceGloria (talk) 09:47, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
    [edit]

Let's not do things half-assedly. Leave the breadcrumbs alone and properly aligned until such time as we actually do get rid of those other articles. I'll be happy to do all the breadcrumb work myself if I have to, so let's not let it sit around in a half-this-scheme-half-that-scheme state until that day finally comes round. That just makes it more difficult to use the category structure to see clearly what we have and what we are shifting to. Texugo (talk) 18:44, 23 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Geo

    [edit]

PrinceGloria, thanks for correcting my efforts to put correct coordinates for a couple of restaurants in Berlin/City West. I clicked the "add listing" button, pasted the address, then clicked "locate on geomap". When I got into the map, it just showed a world map, so I pasted the address and clicked "Locate!" I just realized that if I zoomed out, I would have realized it was finding a street of the same name in a suburb of Leipzig. So my mistake was not to include the name of the city in my search. Sweden

    [edit]

Hey there. Thanks for working on the regions of Sweden. Could you do me a favor - could you just help me keep the corresponding categories up to date with the actual article breadcrumbs? The IsPartOf for the categories has to be changed manually too, and it would be great if you could alert me and/or tag categories for regions that have been removed from the hierarchy, so that they can be deleted. Thanks a lot! Texugo (talk) 20:23, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know Texugo, I was wondering why they don't disappear automatically. Will let you know which ones are up for deletion as we go through them. I am almost done with Scania, so five will be up for deletion shortly. PrinceGloria (talk) 20:25, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
We don't need to nominate them for deletion. I just need to know which region articles you´re taking out of the hierarchy and/or turning into redirects. Texugo (talk) 20:29, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Texugo, I am done with Scania and the following categories may now be deleted: Category:Söderslätt, Category:Southeast Scania, Category:Middle Scania, Category:Northwest Scania, Category:Northeast Scania. Seems like somebody's deleted them already though... PrinceGloria (talk) 03:38, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. Yeah, thanks. I already found them and deleted them and created the necessary new categories. That's it, reorganization complete? Texugo (talk) 03:46, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
For Scania, we are done now. I believe Ypsilon's reorganization of the regions of Sweden made Western Sweden and Southeastern Sweden obsolete as well, not sure about if categories were sorted out at that point. We will be doing a bit of a reorg regarding the regions around Stockholm as well, and removing some unnecessary divisions inside other Swedish counties/provinces later on. PrinceGloria (talk) 03:49, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ahaaa! So THAT'S why What links here still shows links to Western Sweden and Southeastern Sweden that I can't see. Sweden articles still have subdistricts that are obsolete, e.g. in Västergötland and Dalarna that we will get rid off at some point. ϒpsilon (talk) 04:43, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Other destinations

    [edit]

We use Cities in the general sense, to mean any type of community, city, town, settlement, etc. No matter the size, those go in the Cities section. Other destinations is for things that are not communities, e.g. parks, islands, etc. See Wikivoyage:Article templates/Sections. Texugo (talk) 13:19, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I will raise that there. This would make the list @Bodensee Region unwieldily long, while the pages for the small towns are more like pages for a castle or some other structure than the town itself, as there is nothing else to see. PrinceGloria (talk) 13:27, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's just the way we've always done it, and I think it makes sense to keep non-community articles separate from community articles, regardless of the size. Plus if we give the green light to subjectively judge some communities as small enough to list separately, it'll just encourage people to use the OD section in non-bottom-level region articles to fill it up with cities that exceed the 9 listed in Cities. Texugo (talk) 13:37, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
And that's what should happen. We should link to as many destinations as possible from the regional article, not bury them so that they are hard to find. PrinceGloria (talk) 13:42, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I replied there, but you misunderstand something else too: in the lowest level regions (only) the maximum of 9 does not apply. Of course they need to list all the destinations or they'll be orphaned. But that isn't an argument for putting them in the Other destinations section. Texugo (talk) 13:56, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I believe I have made a very valid argument in reply - I believe it to be very worthwhile to visibly point out that Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Sigmaringen and Ravensburg are the most important cities of the region, around which everything else is centred (e.g. transportation networks). Having to look for this kind of information in the minutiae of the article is not helpful. PrinceGloria (talk) 14:02, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello PrinceGloria, regarding the size of the "Café picture", I agree with you, though it is the only one I found on commons that was "generic", but still showed the parisian tables. If it is not OK, I don't mind it being removed. Also there is this mid range priced restaurant: with a view of the river: http://bermuda-onion.fr/ . Website only in french I don't know if it fits the page. Any way, Happy Voyage! and thanks for thanking --DDupard (talk) 16:03, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

User:DDupard, please forgive me for not replying earlier. I believe if we cannot find anything specific of the 15e arr., there is nothing wrong with NOT illustrating the "Eat" section. We may put more pictures of landmarks and other POIs there - e.g. I don't think we have a picture of the Beaugrenelle shopping centre we mention in the article. Admin?

    [edit]
Wielding a mop is serious business.

Hi, User:PrinceGloria. Your name came up in a discussion of possible new admins. You've participated in all kinds of content creation and organizational/policy discussions, so I think you'd be a natural. Becoming an admin would enable you to delete spam pages and block spam accounts, among other tools. I'll nominate you if you'd be willing to take on the role of administrator, whose tasks you can see at this link. Let me know if you're interested.

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:19, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

User:Ikan Kekek, I am most flattered to learn of that, and I would like to thank all involved, especially User:Saqib, who mentioned my name. I do not think I would make a good administrator, as my involvement in Wikivoyage is ebb-and-flow, depending on the nature of my work at a given moment. Moreover, quite honestly I guess I might find patrolling pages and dealing with persistent vandals and, more seriously, W. Frank, boring and tedious unlike editing selected articles or drafting up policies and will simply slack off. Last but not least, I am currently actively contesting some policies and guidelines, and some of them privately in my head only thus far, so I would have a hard time enforcing them. I hope you will understand and agree with me there are probably better candidates. PrinceGloria (talk) 04:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I understand. I don't think contesting policies would make you a bad admin in the least, but if you'd rather remain in your current role, that's great. If you change your mind, let me know, because we could use some more hands on deck with the mop. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:45, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I got it IK why Your Highness Prince Gloria of the Republic of Wikivoyage don't want to become an admin because mops and buckets are not for meant for royals but for Aam Aadmi. --Saqib (talk) 05:11, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Barcelona/Sant Martí

    [edit]

Hi Prince Gloria, I just noticed (very belatedly) all the work you put into the Sant Marti guide. That's quite an improvement, it looks good. -Shaundd (talk) 05:24, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Shaundd! Barcelona still needs a lot of work, though, especially Gracia and the Northern Suburbs - which we will probably need to split into East and West in due course, but for now there is not enough content there even for one article. The main article for Barcelona is also a hot mess. I plan on going to Barcelona in November and I was scrambling to get it in shape by then for my own benefit, so if you can help it would be just great! PrinceGloria (talk) 05:28, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree Northern Suburbs needs to be split at some point, but yeah, there isn't much content there. I was in Barcelona a couple of years ago and had plans to fix up the article, but life has had other plans since. I'll see what I can do. Enjoy the trip though, I was only in Barcelona for three or four days and realized that that barely scratches the surface of what you can see and do there. -Shaundd (talk) 05:24, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Creating categories

    [edit]

Hi PrinceGloria. When creating new categories don't forget to populate the parent category in the new category template (<!-- insert name of next region level up here -->), otherwise the internal wiring used for category trees and breadcrumbs will be incomplete. It looks like Traveler100 already updated Category:Lake Como and I've updated Category:Lombardian Alps and Prealps, but if you create any other categories it's an important step. Thanks! -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:34, 11 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Poland region maps

    [edit]

Hi Prince Gloria, I took a quick look at the Poland regions (that's the voivodships, right?). Are they all ready with no further subregion breakdowns or changes? If they are, would some be higher priority than others (since, as you've seen, I'm a bit slow to get things done at times)? Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 22:11, 14 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Things are a bit slow in terms of work on Poland atm, as it is pretty much me alone with very sporadic input from others, but if I got a map then it would be a good impulse for me to work on it. I am not certain some regions would not earn further subdivisions at some point, but we do not seem to be in danger of it happening anytime soon (and then, we would need a map anyway, just with more colours ;) ). I do not think Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Opolskie, Podkarpackie or Lubuskie will be subject to subdivision soon due to their size. Please see if any of them are to your liking. Or choose any other close to your heart :) PrinceGloria (talk) 13:30, 15 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll start with that. It'll probably take a few weeks since I want to get a couple of other things done first. -Shaundd (talk) 15:28, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Super, can't wait! Do enjoy whatever's on your schedule, Shaundd! PrinceGloria (talk) 08:59, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi PrinceGloria, I started work on the Lubuskie and Opolskie maps. There aren't very many destinations in those regions that we currently have articles for. Should I just note the destinations listed on the region page or are there other places worth noting, as well? Cheers. -Shaundd (talk) 04:16, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
That's great to hear, Shaundd! With regard to Opolskie, I am quite afraid this small voivodship has all of its touristically significant destinations listed already. For Lubuskie, I would consider adding Kostrzyn nad Odrą and Muskauer Park / Park Mużakowski (UNESCO site), as well as Zielona Góra Babimost airport (insignificant, but not mentioned in the text and having scheduled traffic). In both cases, please do mark main motorways, railway lines and rivers. When in doubt whether or not to include one, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks! PrinceGloria (talk) 20:33, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Since you offered... :-) For rivers, the map currently has the Oder/Odra and the Warta -- should there be others? And what are the main railway lines? Thanks. -Shaundd (talk) 06:31, 26 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Opolskie: rivers - Odra and Nysa; main roads: E40/A4 and all the red ones; railway lines: orange ones
Lubuskie: for rivers and railways I'd go by this (you can skip the thinner black railways, they are truly insignificant), for roads: this
    I hope this helps! PrinceGloria (talk) 17:48, 26 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
So I'm starting to work on the railroads and I'm a bit confused by the "orange" railways in Opolskie. Some are orange with black lines (which I'm assuming are the major lines, like the one that roughly parallels the A4) and some are orange without the black lines (like Opole-Nysa). Did you mean all orange lines or just the prominent orange lines? Thanks! -Shaundd (talk) 06:39, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I guess the ones with black markings could be electrified and the orange-only ones not - I am not sure, I forgot where I got the map from and I don't have the description. Anyway, there are trains from Opole to Nysa every hour, so I guess we need to include it as a major line. PrinceGloria (talk) 13:26, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm getting close to putting up a couple of maps, but have two more questions:
    1. The train link between Opole and Kluczbork isn't orange in the map but should I put it in anyways?
    2. You mentioned including Zielona Gora Babimost airport -- is that the airport that's about 30 km northeast of the city? The map I'm looking at isn't terribly specific.
The line between Opole and Kluczbork is not terribly busy (one or two trains a day, I believe), so I would recommend skipping it. PrinceGloria (talk) 07:19, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
    Thanks. -Shaundd (talk) 06:53, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, the Lubuskie map is up! Let me know of any changes. Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 07:03, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I posted a Dolnośląskie region map. It still needs clean-up but let me know of any other changes! -Shaundd (talk) 05:22, 5 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Oh it's just FAB! If by "cleanup" you mean sorting out some labels overlapping roads and such, those are the only things I could think to nitpick about if hard-pressed for it. I will get down to brushing up Dolnośląskie sometime down the road and then I might probably come up with some specific request, but for now all I can think of is perhaps moving the scale to the upper left hand corner and using the remaining big swathe of Czech Republic in lower left hand corner to put a small map indicating the location of Dolnośląskie within Poland, so that we could do away with the separate pic that is now above your map. PrinceGloria (talk) 12:48, 5 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sorting out the labels was pretty much what I meant. There is lots of space in that lower left corner, I'll see a small map looks. -Shaundd (talk) 04:11, 8 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Individual apartments

    [edit]

Where does it state individual holiday apartments are not allowed? Wondering about, undo. Understand agencies are as a rule not allowed but individual Rental listings are if bookable for one week or less. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:40, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I always understood the rule the way that individual apartments are not allowed, I think I read it someplace else that the one you link to, that clearly pertains to agencies. I find it only logical NOT to allow individual apartment listings, as they are numerous and very volatile now with the advent of airBnB and such, and we might get flooded with opportunistic apartment owners wanting to advertise theirs. I will raise it over there. PrinceGloria (talk) 05:52, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Bussed

    [edit]

According to dictionary.com, "bused" is preferred over "bussed," though both spellings are given. I think there's a good reason to use the single "s" version of "bused," "busing" and "buses," however, which is that to buss is to kiss. Granted, though, in these situations, there isn't much likelihood of confusion, so it's no big deal and I won't make a Federal case over it. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:50, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I agree that the single 's' version is better and more common. The two 's' version only makes me think of clearing away dishes and cleaning tables in a restaurant, i.e. what a busser does. Texugo (talk) 12:06, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Whichever, pls feel free to correct my spelling. I just checked in another dictionary and they didn't provide "bused" as allowable form at all. I type quite fast and make plentiful mistakes, so feel free to correct or revert if my corrections are wrong. BTW, would be great to devote some time to Milan and its districts, EXPO starts this week. Got your tickets booked? Would be great to meet there! PrinceGloria (talk) 12:20, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Wikivoyage:Tourism Bureau Expedition

    [edit]

Hi @PrinceGloria: I was looking at Wikivoyage:Tourism Bureau Expedition and was reading about what it is and what it aims to do. I am impressed by it and would like to help with it. But I don't exactly know how it works or how to contribute to it. I saw you had recently been on its talk page and I wondered whether you could help me understand it and how to go about helping with it? I would be able to help especially with South East England (East Sussex and Eastbourne in particular). Thanks.  Seagull123  Φ  20:06, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for reaching out, @Seagull123:. Do pardon my belated reply - in an ironic twist, my travelling is keeping me away from WV :D Basically, the aim of the expedition is to reach out to tourism bureaus and encourage them in all possible ways to start contributing.
Most of those organizations maintain their own solid databases of attractions, accommodation facilities, gastronomic outlets and the such, while also being up to speed with any changes to local transportation, current events relevant to tourists etc. Therefore, we find it would only serve WV better if they shared this information here and helped us update all that info.
The benefit for them is not only in improving the coverage of their destinations and making sure tourists have access to up-to-date guides on a website that is already very high in search rankings and is a natural reference thanks to its connection to Wikipedia, but also the fact that our guides are CC and thus free for them to reuse for their own purposes, thus taking advantage of the writing skills, experiences and insights of the dozens of contributors.
As to how to help, the answer is simple - we just need to get those tourist boards on board, to say so clumsily, and convince them to contribute - be it by email, phone or personal contact. A demonstration of how to use WV and the main principles would go a long way - if you can make it in person to sb in your local tourist boards, this would probably go a long way. At any rate, do let me know if this answered your questions and whether I can be of any further assistance.
Best regards from sweet Brussels! PrinceGloria (talk) 06:48, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
@PrinceGloria: Thanks, I have already seen this, but I haven't had a chance to get around to doing this. I will probably be doing this in the next week or so. Thank you anyway!  Seagull123  Φ  20:35, 17 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Lakeview-North Center re-cropped banner

    [edit]

Following the comment you made about the Wrigley Field sign clashing with the title (this happened because I created the original banner for the Hebrew Wikivoyage where the title in the banners is on the right side), I made a new banner where the title doesn't cover the Wrigley Field sign. please indicate in that discussion if the new re-cropped banner is better/acceptable in your opinion. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 15:56, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Saarland Banner

    [edit]

Hi, I noticed the banner for Saarland was in PNG format, so I took the liberty to recreate it from the original source as a JPEG instead.

Unfortunately I was not able to just create a new version of the existing file, so I created a new one here.

It means that you lost the attribution and therefore just wanted to let you know. I have attributed you and the connection on both files talk pages. Thanks --Andrewssi2 (talk) 09:44, 25 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Doesn't bother me the slightest, but thank you for your consideration and effort in both mentioning my attribution and contacting me. I do not pay heed to the attribution of banners to myself, so feel free to modify, recreate and replace any banner I ever made. PrinceGloria (talk) 05:08, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

    HI Hamburg

    [edit]

Just interested. Has been a couple of years since I stayed there but used to stay regularly (close to free port and good for walking my dog). Has it gone down hill some? No longer a bottle of beer in the fridge, shame that was a carry over tradition from previous owners? --Traveler100 (talk) 05:41, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Go over to TripAdvisor for photos and details. I really can't see why anybody would stay there given the number of better options. And frankly, even when the hotel was still in a bearable condition, there are so many better options with central location - one can go walk the dog or run along the Alster or in the Schanzen IMHO (unless I am insensitive to some canine needs). Trains to Wroclaw

    [edit]

A new weekend train from Berlin where reinstated on May 1st and will runt at least until September, see [1]. I personally think it is useful to mention connections that have recently been dropped. It's quite common practice across Wikivoyage.

    --Jonte-- (talk) 11:36, 5 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Jonte--: - Oh, I missed it, sorry. I do not think it is useful to mention dropped connections - it seems relevant today but will just be odd and confusing two to five years from now, which is how long sections of articles can remain unchanged in our circumstances. New York City articles

    [edit]

This is just a quick note to thank you for doing some good work on New York City articles. If you have anything to add to Manhattan/Lower East Side, it needs some love. And since I avoid it a lot nowadays and don't have much interest in researching the hotels there...

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:04, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Ikan Kekek! I am preparing for a trip to NYC and Dallas and researching hotels is of more importance then ever... I am not so sure we need THAT many districts in NYC, perhaps the lack of interest in Lower East Side is justified - I will look into that, moving slowly down the West side now. You may want to look into Dallas, by the way, I am not sure this city needs districts at all, while it certainly needs love! PrinceGloria (talk) 07:08, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I don't know much about Dallas. I think the Lower East Side probably should remain its own article, because it's overrun with young people attracted to all its bars. It just needs more coverage by people who like its current incarnation. But if we were going to merge it with anything, I'd suggest merging it with East Village, as the East Village used to be universally considered part of the Lower East Side until the 60s or so. Re:Images in the Central Park guide

    [edit]

If you want to add more pictures to the Central Park page, I'm fine with that. But how about you expand the content first and then add more pics, so that the images do not overwhelm the actual content? Additionally, many of the images I removed were redundant--for instance, there were two shots of The Pond, two of The Met, and three of Bethesda Fountain/Terrace, when really you should generally try to stick to one really good one to illustrate a specific attraction.

    Additionally, regarding this comment:

We also agreed no to force sizes and leave it up to user settings to determine how they display, it would be good to stick to that.

Firstly, I certainly wasn't aware of such a discussion. Moreover, it actually goes against the specific wording of Wikivoyage:How to add an image, which specifically recommends 250px as a generally good size for thumbnails. There were a few I expanded to 300px (a common size on many of our other guides) to show off more detail. So I don't think there's any policy backing to your argument not to size up an image. PerryPlanet (talk) 20:00, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

As a side note, it seems worthwhile to point to this excerpt from Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images:
Don't get overexcited adding images to articles. Travellers may be using Wikivoyage from networks with very low bandwidth. In some countries, an internet café with ten computers connected to a single 56k modem is still fairly common. Even travellers in developed countries can often be limited to 10k mobile GPRS access.
This doesn't mean no images, just no more images than are necessary to make the article beautiful and informative.
Now obviously "no more images than are necessary" is up to subjective taste. But do you not feel that the current number of images on the Central Park guide make the article beautiful and informative? PerryPlanet (talk) 20:06, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to pointing that out, I find this obsolete and counterintuitive and will gladly put this up for discussion. My idea of a good travel guide is Dorling Kindersley, not Pascal. PrinceGloria (talk) 20:23, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Just out of curiosity, what about the current image policy is so disagreeable that it has turned you away from editing WV?
