    Listings in districted cities

    [edit]

Hi, and thanks so much for all your great edits to articles about Dhaka! One point to consider about the main article about the city, though: In articles about districted cities, there normally shouldn't be any templated listings; instead, there should be a prose summary of the highlights of things to see, do, buy, eat, etc. You may want to look at the "See" sections of Star-level districted cities like Washington, D.C., Singapore, San Francisco, Copenhagen and Chicago for examples of how sights are treated in them.

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:45, 6 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Delhi Page

    [edit]

Dear Ikan Kekek thanks for your advice. Presently I have started working on the Delhi page https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Delhi and find that there are no district listing. Shall I create different articles for the the districts of Delhi. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 11:44, 29 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Rangan Datta Wiki! My suggestion would be to make up a proposal of the districts you'd like to divide Delhi into, and the boundaries between them, and post that to Talk:Delhi#Districts. Someone (not necessarily you) should probably make a map of Delhi that shows the districts before articles are started on each district. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:35, 29 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I now see that a map of Delhi with districts already exists. I am nothing close to an expert on the districts of Delhi, but should one of them be "Old Delhi"? I still think the precise boundaries should be clearly laid out in the talk page thread. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:57, 29 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

    Thanks

    [edit]

Thank you for adding content to articles about places in India! I may come behind you and make some marginal copy edits, but what's most important is the content.

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:46, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

    Thanks Ikan Kekek--Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 06:52, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, there's a "but" now, though there wasn't before - be careful not to add too many images. The last three images in the Mandu article are beyond the text and status box, and even the picture of Roopmati's Pavilion goes just a little lower than that. In any case, there's no need to try to exhaustively illustrate Wikivoyage guides - that's why we link the appropriate Wikimedia Commons category. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:01, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear Ikan Kekek, I will be adding the detilas in the "see" section soon, hope to do it in a day or two. This is solve the problem. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 11:51, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. That would solve the problem in the best way. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:15, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

    Detout

    [edit]

Hi. Would you like to detout this listing? After I read "Sterling Resort Puri is ideal..." I was ready to revert the edit, but then I saw it was by you and not a deliberate touter. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:06, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Dear Ikan Kekek (talk) I have rectified the content, do have a look. Any more suggestions do get back to me. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 03:22, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It's better. However, "fully equipped" has no obvious meaning, and you don't really indicate what's unconventional about that resort. I'd also say you can leave out "Excellent location" from Puri Hotel's description, and the price should go in the "price" tab. If you edit hotel descriptions a lot, it'll become easier to tell what information and words are essential or not. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:39, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Dear Ikan Kekek (talk) I have made the necessary changes, hope they are OK. Its true I don't edit hotel descriptions much, my interest has always been in the "see: section. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 03:51, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Understood. I just looked through the entire section, and it was absolutely filled with touting. This is my attempt to cut through it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:13, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
And further cleanup. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:16, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Ikan Kekek (talk) I will try to categorize the hotels and mark them on the map. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 05:43, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Great! Another good thing one of us or someone else could do is alphabetize them. It looks like they were roughly alphabetized at one point. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:45, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

    Autopatroller

    [edit]

You're an Autopatroller now. Thanks for all your helpful edits!

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:04, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

But do be careful to distribute images throughout articles and don't crowd them in 1-2 sections. The relevant guidelines are at Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images. I'll trust you to consult that section whenever you need a reminder. :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:18, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Ikan Kekek (talk) I will keep this in mind --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 07:05, 2 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

    Indian Hill forts...

    [edit]

Wikivoyage has an article on Fortifications, however I'm sure that Wikipedia had a fairly extensive article on hill forts in India and the surrounding region, and there are some archaeological sites that perhaps should have a mention.

Was this something you would be interested in looking into, given that you've contributed to a number of guides about places in Indian regions on Wikivoyage previously? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:40, 27 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear ShakespeareFan00 thanks for sharing the article on Fortifications it contains only one fort from India, the Red Fort Delhi, I will definitely add a few more. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 15:20, 30 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rangan, I started Hill stations in India some time ago but it is nowhere near complete. Given your knowledge, you are very welcome to make improvements and additions to the article! Gizza (roam) 00:56, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi GizzaI have started working on the article. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 14:50, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'll join if I can. That day does not look good for me right now. I think this is a great idea, though. Thank you for initiating this. Ground Zero (talk) 18:12, 10 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Dear all, kindly note the Wikivoyage Workshop on 29th August 2020 (Saturday) is scheduled at 12:30 UTC not 23:30 UTC, sorry for any inconvenience caused to anyone. Marajozkee (talk) 15:27, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

The workshop will focus on basic wikivoyage editing for experienced wikimedians, who have been working on other projects. The workshop will be held in English and encourage participants to develop wikivoyage in their own language. It would be great if you people could join in. Looking forward to meet all of you virtually. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 12:48, 21 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

    In preparation for the workshop

    [edit]

I'm going to suggest a small homework assignment for you, just to brush up before the workshop. :-) Please look through Wikivoyage:Article skeleton templates and Wikivoyage:Naming conventions. Also, take note of the easiest way to create a reliable article template in a new article:

    (1) Do a search for the title you want to create a new article for. (2) If you don't find it, click on the red link in your search results in the sentence "Create the page "[name]" on this wiki!". (3) The third paragraph at the resulting link will say "To start, please click on one of the following links to pre-fill this article with the standard sections:" (4) The next line looks like this:

City • City District • Region • National Park • Phrasebook • Huge airport • Dive site • Disambiguation • Redirect

    (5) Click the type of article you want to create.

That's it! A standard skeleton template for that type of article is created! Of course you can tweak it by creating subheadings within sections, though some of those are standard, too.

However, if you start your article a different way, please note what the standard sections are. For example, we always use "Get in", never "Getting in", and that can't be changed without a discussion at Wikivoyage talk:Article skeleton templates that results in a new consensus behind a different section name (and that won't ever happen in this case, I daresay).

In terms of naming conventions, "Diamond Triangle, Odisha" is Wikipedia-style; we use Diamond Triangle (Odisha), if not indeed "Diamond Triangle (India)", which the article might be renamed to.

I am going to bed. If you have any questions, please just type them below and someone will answer.

    All the best,

    Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:10, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Ikan Kekek for all the suggestion. We presently have 46 registration. DaGizza will be there with me, but he wont be able to stay for the entire period. বাংলা উইকিভ্রমণ

    [edit]

--Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 15:54, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Feedback

    [edit]

Hi Rangan, the link that you sent me is not working so I will post my feedback here.

    1. User:DaGizza
    2. I think it was a wonderful initiative and excellent way to introduce Wikivoyage to so many new, prospective editors. For future presentations, the structure and order of the presentation may need to be tweaked to make it more useful for new editors going forward.
    3. I would say that the first half in particular was too technical. My suggestion is to start with what is Wikivoyage, why does it exist and the first type of edits that should be taught is adding basic content. Like a sentence to Understand (and explaining that citations are not used here). Then how to add a listing. And finally more technical things like making maps for regions. Starting off with region maps was a dive into the deep end of the pool.
    4. I haven't implemented anything so far into a regional Wikivoyage but I may soon.
    5. I support having more workshops. The more you have, the more people will feel comfortable editing here.
    6. 4 out of 5
    7. Gizza (roam) 00:57, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I echo DaGizza's comments. Well done. It seemed that the participants were getting a lot out if it. Starting with basics and working up to more complicated matters might be a good approach if you run another workshop. It looked like you had a good turn-out of interested people, so I think it would be worth repeating. Ground Zero (talk) 01:21, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear DaGizza and Ground Zero thank you for the support and the feedback. I can understand I have made it a little more technical. But it was a great learning experience for me. I have copy-pasted both your feedback in the page. I am looking forward for more such wikivoyage workshops at the international level, can something be done in your community? Thanks once more and do keep in touch. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 02:59, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

    Indian Castles?

    [edit]

Can you write a short summary for Castles in respect of the South Asian ones? I've seen some hill forts termed 'castles'. If not then I think there is an article at Forts_and_palaces_of_India that needs some copyediting.

    Thanks. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:48, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dear ShakespeareFan00 just give me some time. I will check this out. Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 17:51, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
