The list of the top 10 largest countries in the world by surface area
Which country in the world is the largest? Find out here from our list of the top 10 largest countries in the world by surface area.
Despite its status as a world economic and military power, France is not part of the top thirty of this ranking, after comparing the different areas.
The list of the 10 largest countries in the world by area is by far dominated by Russia. The former Soviet Union, despite its split a few years ago, still retains an impressive area. For those who still don’t know, Russia is nearly 30 times larger than France in terms of area. It is therefore no coincidence that the former Soviet Union is by far at the top of the list of the 10 largest countries in the world by area. To date, the total area of Russia is estimated at 17,125,191 km².
As a reminder, the area of Russia also takes into account that of the Republic of Crimea, a territory that has been claiming its independence from the former Soviet power for years. But the withdrawal of the Crimean area does not change much in the ranking, since Russia is the only country on the planet to have exceeded the bar of 10 million km². To give you a more precise idea, know that Russia alone represents a little more than half of the area of Africa which is estimated at 30 million km².
In second place in our ranking, after comparing the different areas, we find Canada. As surprising as it may seem, Canada is much larger than the United States of America. Canada comes second on the list of the 30 largest countries in the world by area, with an estimated total area of 9,984,670 km². The United States of America follows closely in the ranking with an estimated area of 9,629,091 km². As a reminder, there are several African countries on this list of the largest countries on the planet in terms of area.
