Hiya Evan. I miss your constant input to the site. Would you please comment on the above topic on VFD. Seems to be a conflict in policy. Once again, to you and the wife. GREAT IDEA on Wikivoyage. Hopefully, it will be around, long after you and I are gone. Best wishes!!! (WT-en) 2old 14:39, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

    Vandalism policy?

    [edit]

I don't know about you folks (I'm sending the same message to several), but I for one am getting sick and tired of the intentional vandalism that's going on here. I am trying to start a discussion on Project:Community policies as to whether something more forceful needs to be in place to deal with it. Historically, we have bent far over backwards to avoid punitive action against vandals and have simply gone in and cleaned up the messes they create. However, the frequency of vandalism is growing, and I am not convinced that we are doing Wikivoyage a service by tolerating it. This said, I'm not at all sure what the "right" response is.

I'd appreciate your participation in the discussion on that talk page. Let's see if we can come up with something appropriate. -- (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 11:40, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

    Cross-lingual mediawiki typo

    [edit]

Hi Evan, I hope your anniversary went well!

Would you please take a look at wts:WtTech:Typo_in_recent_changes_message. It is a very simple bug to fix, but it requires sysop-level access across multiple language versions—for some of which you are the sole admin. Fixing it only requires following the mediawiki links on the bug report page and replacing the existing text with:

    Below {{PLURAL:$1|is '''1''' change|are the last '''$1''' changes}} in the {{PLURAL:$2|day|last '''$2''' days}}, as of $3.

    Thanks! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 03:00, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

wikivoyage : United Kingdom - 9 cities list

    [edit]

Hi there Evan, I have recently added to the discussion on the United Kingdom entry, regarding the 9 cities list ( under "the old city problem" headed "new for 2007" ). I have asked for a consensus on a new proposal to make the 9 cities list more accurately represent the previous consensus which was to base the 9 cities on visitor numbers. So far the majority have been For this change. There appears to be lots of people in support of the proposal. I have messaged some of the other users who were vocal in participation before, however for many of them they have not been active since 2006, which means chances are they will not reply. Also, it is worth noteing that for the current list of 9 cities, there was ever any concensus, and ironically, my recent proposal surpasses what was previously proposed in terms of number of people supporting it. Id therefore like to ask you to contribute to the discussion with a view to alter/amend the list using ur experience. --(WT-en) Daniel robinson 15:12, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

    MediaWiki OpenID extension

    [edit]

Hi Evan. I have an issue getting the OpenID extension to work on my local wiki. I want to add proper i18n for it (not that difficult), and I need to know if things still work as expected after my code changes :)

Setup (following ./README in the extension directory):

    • OS: Windows Xp with Wampserver
    • Application server:
    • PHP: 5.2.3 (openssl extension added)
    • MySQL: 5.0.41-community
    • MediaWiki: 1.12alpha (r27750) (SVN head)
    • OpenID: SVN (no other extensions installed)
      • ran sql script
      • LocalSettings.php: require_once("$IP/extensions/OpenID/OpenID.php"); (at the bottom)
      • php-openid-2.0.0-rc5 (installed in D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID\)
      • php.ini: include_path = ".;c:\php\includes;D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID" (had to add the second path to make Special:OpenIDLogin display.

Now I get this error after I fill in an OpenID URL in Special:OpenIDLogin and submit it:

Fatal error: Define Auth_OpenID_RAND_SOURCE as null to continue with an insecure random number generator.
    in D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID\Auth\OpenID\CryptUtil.php on line 52

I am not an experienced programmer; more like a monkey that learned a small PHP trick ;). I hope you can help with it. Please drop me a line on my Betawiki talk page. Cheers! (WT-en) siebrand 17:50, 22 November 2007 (EST)

You wrote, "The "List of Unions" needs to be broken down into regions/cities like other Wikivoyage guides." I am interested to comply. Could you please guide me to a couple of appropriate examples (I have checked a few, but those models would be impossible to be replicated on this article)? You can reply to the artcile talk page, so that other editors get to use the examples as well. Cheers. (WT-en) Aditya Kabir 11:51, 2 December 2007 (EST)

    Maps

    [edit]

hi, thankyou for everything you've done on wikivoyage, it really is brilliant, have used it on my (financially) limited travels many times and edited it to improve the service. Anyway, I've been doing a lot of work on the East Sussex page, and was wondering if you could put me in contact with anyone who wouldn't mind making a map for the area? I've had a go myself but other than looking like a strange post modernist painting I've not come up with much... although the help file on how to make a map was useful... just my skills that aren't. thanks in advance --(WT-en) Prof Jack 20:32, 8 December 2007 (EST)

    Geographic Co-ordinates

    [edit]

Evan - has WT settled on a standard way to collect and display geographic co-ordinates? There has been some discussion at OpenStreetMap.org about enabling OSM users to link their map data with WikiTravel pages. WP seem to be using Template:Coord and at Yellowikis we haven't got much further than using a simple <geo> tag - any thoughts? --(WT-en) Payo 08:46, 12 December 2007 (EST)

Hi Payo, I'm not sure if Evan is checking this page anymore. You might want to have a look at Project:How to draw a map#OpenStreetMap and perhaps raise your questions there; there is considerable interest here in cooperation between Wikivoyage and OpenStreetMap. Sorry I can't personally be of more help in answering your question. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:30, 15 December 2007 (EST)

    Can we enable $wgAllowUserCss = true;

    [edit]

Could you add $wgAllowUserCss = true; to the main LocalSettings.php file? This setting allows users to create their own CSS files and customise the experience a little. Personally I prefer the body text to be 125% so that's how I use it. Cheers - (WT-en) chmac 01:35, 30 December 2007 (EST)

Evan i have a complaint they keep vfding my articles outlines or deleting them like cjensen and 203 ip user along with oldpine and many others read this Make outlines. Don't be daunted by the task of writing all of the article about Russia -- just get it started with an outline. People are much more likely to change or add to articles than to start them from scratch. We have a bunch of handy templates for destination guides, which you can use. If you only know a teensy bit about a subject, go ahead and add it in. We currently have a huge backlog of stub articles that shouldn't really be there. It is easy to create an outline for most articles and move them to the next level. You can help there. it tells ya right there from now on i will make outlines and people can add on if they want k peace --72.87.57.201 13:16, 27 January 2008 (EST)

    [edit]

Evan. Thanks for contributing to a great project. wikivoyage is gaining steam. Your choice to remove ALL external links seems to have resolved the issue of "intentional vandalism". Citing sources of information is more journalistic in nature and will continue to enhance wikivoyage as a credible travel source.

    Suggestion

    [edit]

Please pass this to anyone who may be more appropriate.

In using & contributing to pages for several locations, have often wished there was major section specifically for (links to) photos and maps. Would help everyone focus there when trying to visualize a location, with opportunity to insert or use many more sources.

Section need not be at expense of photos/maps scattered throughout current articles.

    Rogue Bureaucrat

    [edit]

I would like to address some ongoing issues with a particular bureaucrat and one of his admins. The general idea is he follows me around and basically harasses me whenever I make an edit to one of his pages. He seems to need the last word on all the edits. I'm finding this a little perplexing since I thought it was understood that edits can be made and that factual information matter. Frankly, I think it's getting a little personal and the boundaries of fairness and good sense are being breached. I've written the details in a letter I have sent to your Wiki email since I thought it would be too much for this talk page. I am a travel writer and enjoyed working on this site very much initially. However it's become a demoralizing and draining experience lately. It's unfortunate and would hope to return to my original opinion on the task. Thanx(WT-en) Paula 20:02, 22 January 2009 (EST)

    district titles

    [edit]

One question about the rule you inserted long time ago (see here).

I was curios about the reason behind choice. Why to use this syntax instead of the classic wiki one (e.g. district (city)) or a more verbose one (e.g. "district of city" or similar...) that is longer but it could be used directly in the wikilink instead of applying a label all the time? An important message about renaming users

    [edit]

    Dear EvanProdromou,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Old Wikitravel account name (and email/password)

    [edit]

    Hey Evan!

Sorry to bother you, but you are one from very few names I remember from the "old" times. Back in Wikitravel time (and before it was bought by the company) I used to do some edits there (and very few on pl:Wikitravel) under the JanSlupski name. Rigth now I just got some messages about Wikimedia account merging event, and thought it would be nice if my Wikitravel->Wikivoyage edits/account were merged as well. Unfortunately it was not on the merge list, and after some digging I found out that it was renamed to User:(WT-en) JanSlupski. Moreiover I cannot login to it nor recover the password (no email address message or so). Is there any chance to rename this account to just "JanSlupski" and recover the password? I hope I would be able to merge it with "global" "JanSlupski" then.

    Thanks, and all the best,

    Jan

Welcome back Jan! Do you still use the e-mail address you specified on your userpage; "[email protected]" ? New job at Wikimedia Foundation

    [edit]
    Swept in from the pub

As of December 3, 2018, I work as product manager for the next-generation API for Wikimedia Foundation projects.

My job at WMF is to build a great API that makes it easy for third-party developers to make apps and web sites that use information from Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, and all the other WMF sites. I'm especially interested in encouraging developers to add editing capabilities to their tools so that their users are first-class participants in our collaborative projects.

What does this mean for Wikivoyage? I'm not sure. My work at the WMF doesn't focus on Wikivoyage. But my hope is that the work I do will help more contributors to participate and share their knowledge here. I especially hope that I can help those apps that use WV data dumps to show static content to change to a more read-write model. ---EvanProdromou (talk) 21:09, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

@EvanProdromou: Are we able to do a traceback on which sites or apps use WV data dumps? Then we have a better idea why they are using our data. OhanaUnitedTalk page 07:33, 2 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Would it be practical to use Git or some other version control system (maybe even a purpose-built one?) to drive a wiki? That would let mirror sites use Git operations to stay up to date & instead of the current sandboxes in user space, one could have one's own tree for experiments.
It might also allow better filtering of random contributions, newbie mistakes, spam and/or vandalism before they appear in main space. That is really tricky, though. w:Citizendium was a mostly well-intentioned project trying to do something like that, but it failed miserably by getting some of the mechanisms wrong. That's great! Congratulations, Evan! Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:09, 2 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Congrats, Evan. I hope that your work on APIs will allow app makers to better access Wikivoyage data. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:40, 2 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations! The best data that Wikivoyage can offer third-party developers, besides the travel guide itself, might be the listings. A Russian Wikivoyager and I are maintaining this CSV database of Wikivoyage listings, feel free to have a look. There is even a API to query it, but I am sure you could do better if worth the hassle. My personal opinion is that all of this data should go into Wikidata, but I don't see that happening within 10 years, even if everyone shared my opinion, which is not the case :-) Cheers! How we will see unregistered users

    [edit]

    Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

    Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

    Administrator status (Official Notice)

    [edit]

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on February 16, 2022. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Your removal is along with several other admins as discussed here.

    New bureaucrat inactivity policy

    [edit]

You are receiving this message because you are a bureaucrat on this wiki.

Following a successful change in the inactivity policy, the bureaucrat policy has now been updated. Bureaucrats may now have their privileges removed if they have not:

    • Made one edit
    • Made one admin or bureaucrat action

    over a 12-month period.

Bureaucrats who do not meet these requirements will be notified well in advance on their talk pages. Thank you.
