Wikivoyage talk:User account migration Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here
Caution Note: All requests must include verification that both accounts are held by the same person. Otherwise, they will be removed.

    This page is for requests to merge new accounts with old Wikitravel or Wikivoyage accounts (see Wikivoyage:User account migration#Request Username Merge for instructions). General rename requests should not be added here.

    Process

    [edit]

    I'm limited in how much I'll be able to participate, but I can probably help out with renames. However, I've got some questions/concerns:

    1. What do these "rename" requests entail? Are we actually going to rename the "(WT-en) Ikan Kekek" to "Ikan Kekek", or will we just move the old user pages (WV-en and WT-en) to the current Wikivoyage user pages, leaving Template:wtuser or Template:wtuser and a soft redirect on the old page?
    2. How should credentials be determined? It would be nice if each "rename" request included a link to an identifying edit on Wikitravel, Wikivoyage, or some other cross-identification, as well as a signature from the requesting user, otherwise it's tough to verify that the two accounts really are the same. http://www.wikivoyage-old.org/general/WMF_Migration/New_policies/Cross-identification_of_accounts mentioned (for example) making an edit on the site to be merged, something like "I am verifying that this account can be merged to other sites".

    Until these two issues are resolved I'm hesitant to perform any action. -- Ryan • (talk) • 03:33, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Hi, Ryan. What I'd like is for the old user pages to be moved with a soft redirect, and for my contributions on Wikivoyage and Wikitravel, if possible, to come up when I type "My contributions." For verification, have a look here[1] and here[2]. I'm sorry that action is necessary; I did fill out an account migration form before this process commenced, but I guess the action didn't go through. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:19, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Mediawiki does not allow merging of accounts. I suggest that the current User:Ikan Kekek account be renamed to User:Ikan Kekek (usurped and the old User:(WT-en) Ikan Kekek *OR* User:(WV-en) Ikan Kekek be renamed to User:Ikan Kekek, depending on user preference and which user has the more relevant history. Then the remaining two user pages (User:Ikan Kekek (usurped and either User:(WT-en) Ikan Kekek *OR* User:(WV-en) Ikan Kekek depending on which one wasn't moved) can then be simply redirected to User:Ikan Kekek so that anybody looking up the user would be immediately taken to the correct username and userpage. Snowolf How can I help? 11:26, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    I think I can say with great confidence that my account is not usurped: It's just the same account I have at Wikipedia (both accounts were under the same username). I prefer not to explain in public how I know that, but I do.

    So you know what? I guess this really isn't that important. I can just copy and paste my user page from User:(WV-en) Ikan Kekek and put a link to the talk page on my new talk page. So forget it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:18, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    I've merged the User:(WT-en) Ikan Kekek account into User:Ikan Kekek. Please report any issues if you find them. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:26, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    There's a special page that has been created just for Wikivoyage that should be accessible to crats, Special:UserMerge. I think there's a couple of text boxes there and you enter the old username and the new username -- not sure entirely what it does (whether it actually merges accounts or just moves user pages), but perhaps we shuld try that? Thehelpfulone 12:29, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I suppose I could test it on myself, but I've been reluctant to do so. The WV folks were quite adamant that we had to retain (WT-en) accounts as-is for attribution purposes; do we still consider that necessary or is a merge okay if the users have been verified as identical? LtPowers (talk) 12:33, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    One thing you should figure out before merging accounts is what happens with account settings. If you merge User:(WT-en) Example with User:Example, does the merged account get the e-mail address and password of User:Example, or does it get the e-mail address and password of User:(WT-en) Example? I suppose that most people don't know the passwords to their WT-en accounts and I suppose that there are no e-mail addresses set, so you should be careful not to get a merged account which is inaccessible to the user. Maybe you should start by creating two test accounts and merging those... --Stefan2 (talk) 13:52, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    At the request nothing is really done. The renaming must performed by the bureaucrats.
    My experiences with merging: There are two special pages, user rename and user merge. In case of renaming the new account is the same as the old one. And redirects were made from the old to the new one. In case of merging all edits of the old account were transferred to the new one, and the old account is deleted. I think in case of merging the password and email address are taken from the new account.
    Some hours age I tested it with my account. There was another problem. At first I renamed my new but not used name because it was attached to SUL. After this SUL was removed. Then I renamed my old name to the new one and attached it to SUL. Then I merged both accounts. It was working. --RolandUnger (talk) 14:29, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Roland, are we free to merge the (WT-en) accounts with their owners' real accounts, then? LtPowers (talk) 18:38, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Yes. --RolandUnger (talk) 19:09, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    For reference, I just tried this on my own account by doing the following:
    1. Go to Special:UserMerge and enter "(WT-en) Wrh2" as the old user and "Wrh2" as the new user. I also selected the "delete old user" checkbox.
    2. After merging, Special:Contributions/(WT-en)_Wrh2 shows zero contributions, User:(WT-en)_Wrh2 has been deleted, and User:(WT-en)_Wrh2 shows "account is not registered". All good.
    3. Special:Contributions/Wrh2 shows my contributions going back to 2005.
    The results of the merge were the following (message keys apparently need creating):
    <usermerge-editcount-success>
    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>

    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-updating>

    <usermerge-updating>
    <usermerge-success>

    <usermerge-page-deleted>
    <usermerge-page-deleted>

    <usermerge-page-deleted>

    <usermerge-page-deleted>
    <usermerge-page-deleted>
    <usermerge-page-deleted>
    <usermerge-userdeleted>

    So if I'm understanding correctly, the migration process should be the following:
    1. User requests a merge, providing a link to proof that the two accounts are the same.
    2. Bureaucrat moves the old user page to the new user account name (User:(WT-en) Wrh2User:Wrh2) so that the content is maintained. Overwrite any new user page (and talk page) that may have been created.
    3. Bureaucrat uses Special:UserMerge to migrate the user, deleting the old user.
    Does that seem correct? -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:24, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    It seems correct. If the user agree it seems useful to delete the old and empty account. But when anybody signed a comment then is signature is red. If the old account is not deleted you can write a redirect to the old user page. Maybe you should discuss it. --RolandUnger (talk) 19:33, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I just tested it out, and I think deleting the old account is the way to go. We can still create redirects (even though User:(WT-en) LtPowers is no longer a registered user, I can still create that page and #REDIRECT it to User:LtPowers), or we can go through and replace signatures (which is what we did on the import from WT to WV last month anyway, only in reverse). Boo! ...I'm a ghost

    [edit]

    Hi, I am currently logged into Wikivoyage.org as rogerhc. So the following message box, displayed to me on Wikivoyage:User account migration, which states "User does not exist" is confusing. I thought someone had already merged my (en_WT)_rogerhc user (I probably have that format wrong but you know what I mean) and I had given permission to move my data to WMF as I did make an attempt to have that done before the move (posted a diff of my WT edit somewhere or other). Maybe it didn't go through or maybe I am just confused. The technical cleanup that is happening is confusing me. Anyway, I hope this feedback is helpful. I will continue to click away all the same and see if I can scramble the eggs. I have just a moment ago Merged my WMF accounts, which is presumably why "Global Name is Taken", but somehow my Wikivoyage.org account is a ghost and didn't get found there or here. But the Wikivoyage.org database knows me as I am logged in right now. :-) --Rogerhc (talk) 17:17, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Fixed. I am mortal again. I did the MergeAccount thing *again* just to be sure and this time it found my Wikivoyage.org account and connected it. This may be a two step process!: (1) MergeAccounts, (2) UnifyAccounts. I'm not sure. Is it supposed to be? If so, we might want to say so in the MergeAccounts instructions. As I don't understand the process I will forgo trying to clarify the instructions there. Someone who understands what is going on could perhaps do that. :-) --Rogerhc (talk) 17:25, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    User Account Transfer Agreement

    [edit]
    Swept in from the pub

    We are asked by the Wikimedia Foundation to publish a "User Account Transfer Agreement" to transfer all data collected by the Wikivoyage association to the Wikimedia Foundation because of the requirements of German and U.S law.

    This agreement must be made on each wiki separately. In case of the "old" wikis with single-sign on it must only be made once at general. Please follow the links given below:

    You can change your vote several times before the migration to the Wikimedia Foundation. A check mark left of the "I hereby consent to the transfer of all personal data that has been collected by Wikivoyage e.V. about me to Wikimedia Foundation, Inc." message shows that you already agreed to the transfer of your data.

    This transfer will affect only your new accounts. The merging of the old Wikitravel accounts will take part later. --Unger (talk) 17:08, 18 October 2012 (CEST)

    October 15 has already passed! --Globe-trotter (talk) 17:52, 18 October 2012 (CEST)
    The text was written by the Wikimedia Foundation. But it took some time. Nevertheless, you should vote as soon as possible. Hans told me today that the database transfer will take place about October 25. --Unger (talk) 18:15, 18 October 2012 (CEST)
    How will merging existing Wikivoyage and existing WMF accounts be handled? Specifically, if I have the same username here as I do with Wikimedia, I will be not be allowed to transfer per this statement. However, since I own the Wikimedia account with the same username, how can I prove this and maintain this account with the same username after the transition and have it become a part of my Wikimedia unified account? If (or when) this discussion has been handled, please link to it in the message. AHeneen (talk) 21:21, 18 October 2012 (CEST)
    You are allowed to transfer. You'll be able to link both accounts into a unified account.--Globe-trotter (talk) 23:04, 18 October 2012 (CEST)
    wikipedia:WP:Unified login and wikipedia:m:Help:Unified login have some info on how to merge accounts on multiple WMF-hosted projects (each language Wikipedia used to have its own userlist, completely independent of the others). I'd presume the same mechanism applies? K7L (talk) 23:59, 18 October 2012 (CEST)
    Does it make sense to email all users who have opted to receive email, and request them to opt for this? — Ravikiran (talk) 10:16, 21 October 2012 (CEST)
    I already have a Wikipedia account with the same username (I've had it for years). Do I need to do anything? Gamweb (talk) 23:14, 21 October 2012 (CEST)
    I'm registered here using an account which I created using the same username and e-mail as my en.Wikipedia account. I've enabled the special:AccountTransfer bit on my account here and presume that, after this is over, I can go to Wikipedia's Special:MergeAccount to add it to my unified login there as described in wikipedia:m:Help:Unified login. K7L (talk) 05:06, 22 October 2012 (CEST)
    What happens if my user name here at WV is already taken at WMF/WP? I'm Shaund here, but Shaundd] at WM (I couldn't create Shaund because it was too similar to another user id). Cheers -Shaund (talk) 06:02, 24 October 2012 (CEST)
    If your name is different here vs. there, it won't do the unified login (where logging into one WMF wiki logs into all of them) but nothing else should be affected. It is possible to ask WMF to rename you manually if that would help. K7L (talk) 06:45, 24 October 2012 (CEST)

    Also, the link for "If you do not have a WMF Account" doesn't work. After I search and it says "This name is available", when I click "Create Account Now", it sends me to

    but the resulting page just says:

    Account merging

    [edit]
    Swept in from the pub

    Hi, everyone. Very glad to see the beta version of the Wikimedia Wikivoyage up and running! I'm the same Ikan Kekek on Wikimedia (an occasional Wikipedian) that I was on Wikitravel and Wikivoyage. I looked at [Wikivoyage:User account migration] but still don't really get how to move my user page and user talk page from Wikivoyage to the blank spaces that are there now. I guess I could cut and paste from wikivoyage-old.org? Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:08, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Hi Ikan, I believe because you didn't opt for the transfer your old username is at User:(WV-en) Ikan Kekek with all your old user pages and talk pages etc there. A bureaucrat has access to a feature that should allow them to merge that account with your new account new without the (WV-en) prefix. Thehelpfulone 13:12, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    I did opt to transfer all those pages. There was a form I filled out. Perhaps it didn't go through? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:06, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Wikivoyage:Cross-identification of accounts should probably be linked from the site notice as this will likely be a common request, and that policy page should be imported from Wikivoyage General. However, since Special:Import is disabled, I'm not confident of how best to import that page while maintaining proper attribution. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:31, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Hello, Could a bureaucrat merge User:(WT-en) Yann with my account here? Also I was an admin on WT, can I get it here, so that I can help the clean up? Thanks, Yann (talk) 17:33, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Hi, Yann; we still need to confirm that your account here is controlled by the same person as your Wikitravel account. Please see the links Ryan posted above. LtPowers (talk) 21:21, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    As I said in several places, I don't think there is any doubt that User:(WT-en) Yann is me. ;o) Yann (talk) 06:43, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Special:PermanentLink/1715805 suggests that User:(WT-en) Yann is the same as fr:Utilisateur:Yann, and Special:CentralAuth/Yann suggests that fr:Utilisateur:Yann is the same as User:Yann. However, I think that it is better to be careful with these things so that people don't merge different users' accounts by mistake, and that users requesting a merge should provide evidence themselves. Also see the discussion at Wikivoyage talk:User account migration#Process about this matter. --Stefan2 (talk) 15:32, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I presume you mean w:fr:utilisateur:Yann as fr: on its own is Wikivoyage en français? K7L (talk) 15:44, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    How could is it possible to merge different users' accounts by mistake? You have to provide the password of the destination account, I don't see how there could be a mistake. Yann (talk) 07:29, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Well if you're asking a bureaucrat to do the merge, we don't need your password to do it. Let me try to explain.
    When we created the English version of Wikivoyage, populated with edits from Wikitravel, all of the contributions were imported with names that were prefixed with (WT-en). Understandably, those of us who edited on Wikitravel would like to have our imported edits properly attributed to us, but they were being attributed to a different account (one with (WT-en) prefixed). To resolve this -- to "merge" the two accounts as best we were able -- we asked for proof that the person operating the JoeSchmoe account on Wikivoyage was the same person who operated the JoeSchmoe account on Wikitravel. Once we got that proof, we allowed JoeSchmoe to connect his (WT-en) user page to his regular one.
    But this was a surface operation -- there was no technical connection or merge operation performed. We didn't have the ability to do that. But now we can merge old accounts with WMF global accounts, as described at Wikivoyage:User account migration. This is automatic when the names match and the bureaucrats don't need to intervene. But to do so when the names are different (such as with a (WT-en) username), we need to do it manually. As described at the bottom of that page: "You will need to provide a means of proof (e.g. userpage edit on source wiki) to validate any merges/usernames with accounts you don't currently control."
    I hope this clarifies things. -- LtPowers (talk) 12:29, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Why and how Stefan2 and K7L messages above are not sufficient to prove that User:(WT-en) Yann is me? I added the link to my Wikimedia account in 2005. What more do you want? Yann (talk) 17:21, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Before the migration to WMF, we had all such verifications collected in one spot, so we could check them later if that ever needed doing. That page was on Wikivoyage General, however, which did not get migrated. I think the best option, then, is to use Wikivoyage:User account migration and keep all requests there. If you go down to the bottom of that page under "Request Username Merge", you can enter your (WT-en) username and your new username and it puts a formatted request on the talk page. Then you can edit your section on the talk page and provide the evidence that Stefan2 linked above. I know it's a pain, but we want to make sure we've got everything documented correctly.
    In addition, I'm afraid I can't find any evidence that you were an administrator on the English Wiktitravel. If you could point to someplace where I can find your nomination, I'd appreciate it. LtPowers (talk) 18:36, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    OK, done. I was given admin right by Evan at in 2004. It seems that all admin logs were deleted (nothing for user right, deletion, protection, block): [3]. Yann (talk) 19:09, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I can't find any evidence that Yann ever was an admin on English Wikitravel. IBobi has removed adminship for a lot of users as "inactive" or because they have "resigned"[4], but Yann is not in the list. Yann is no longer an administrator on French Wikitravel because of "inactivity"[5] (permanent link), which seems to be enough evidence to make him a sysop at French Wikivoyage. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:15, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    OK, I am applying anew. Yann (talk) 06:54, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Would it be possible to get my edits on User:(WT-en) Xltel merged here with User:Xltel. I requested my account be merged, but I guess it did not work either. Thanks! - Xltel (talk) 00:15, 23 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    I'm not aware of any request you made at Wikivoyage:User account migration. Please do so now. LtPowers (talk) 03:24, 23 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Thanks! Request made. - Xltel (talk) 04:22, 23 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Page for renaming usernames?

    [edit]
    Swept in from the pub

    Should we create a page for rename requests? There's a notice at Wikivoyage talk:User account migration to not request general renames there, but it doesn't say what those users should do. sumone10154(talk) 23:07, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Rather than have a page to maintain/watch (which, granted, we had on wts), I'm tempted to change Wikivoyage:How to create a user account#Changing your username to a link to special:listusers/bureaucrat or better yet Wikivoyage:Bureaucrats. That page hasn't been imported from wts (I have an XML backup) because for unknown reasons special:import is disabled [6]. --Peter Talk 00:14, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
    Have you tried asking a steward for help? For example, User:Snowolf is a steward who has a temporary sysop flag on this project. w:MediaWiki:Importtext says that Special:Import is disabled on English Wikipedia but that stewards nevertheless are able to import pages to English Wikipedia. Maybe stewards also can use Special:Import on this project. Of course, something might have changed since the page on English Wikipedia was written back in 2008. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:24, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Wow, is this page confusing

    [edit]

    Hi. I have edited Wikimedia projects since 2006, Wikitravel now and then, and Wikivoyage since earlier today, all under the handle of PRRfan, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to do to merge my accounts. I am not trying to curse the darkness; this is part of my attempt to light a candle -- by pointing out that it's pretty dark in here. I will also try to edit this page to make it clearer to other Wiki-immigrants. PRRfan (talk) 04:12, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Confirmations missing

    [edit]

    What can we do to make it clearer that you must provide evidence that you are the same person for this to happen? For now, I'm thinking we should just blank all the requests that don't have evidence. --Peter Talk 21:01, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Maybe we should get rid of the renameWizardRequestMerge and simplify that massive section to "contact a bureaucrat: Peter, Ryan, or LtPowers." --Peter Talk 01:45, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
    The rename wizard doesn't make it clear enough that editing the request is needed. Why doesn't it provide an extra text field to allow us to input that evidence right in the wizard? That would be the ideal solution, IMO, but until that's done, perhaps in the instructions (step 3), the text "You must update that request" could be made bold and red. I surely missed it the first time, and after a while my request got removed. (By the way, another suggestion: could you please notify users whose requests get removed? Especially if that happens considerably later than the date the request was submitted. I had to dig into the history of this page to find out what happened to my request!) --Waldir (talk) 19:24, 11 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

    The requests below are created automatically by the "Request Username Merge" form on Wikivoyage:User account migration. See the instructions for requesting a username merge. For an unknown reason I cannot log into the old account. The password I have in my written list for this account does not work, and the password reset system claims I did not put an e-mail address, which I know is not true (see below). My best guess is that the import from WT-en might have invalidate confirmed e-mail addresses. So at the moment what I have for a proof of account ownership is:

    • an e-mail for a password reset, complete with headers that proves my e-mail address was there in 2007 and I controlled the account (same e-mail address as the one I have always been using on Wikimedia projects). I can communicate this e-mail to the bureaucrat/stewards contact address so you could check its authenticity by comparing to server logs, or at least the mail server chain, the IPs shown in the e-mail headers correspond to what was in use at your servers in 2007.
    • check-user on my contributions will show all my 2004 contributions from wikitravel were done from a single IP, and all my 2005 contributions to frwiki, enwiki, and commons used the exact same single IP. The geolocation of that fixed IP that corresponds to a specific place which I can also privately communicate (I was employed there, which I can very easily prove).
    • The account “(WT-en) Jerome” is named after my first name. I just did not create an account on frwiki named like with the same name as it was already taken when I started contributing on Wikipedia. However I used this name as signature (which is all I could do about it). Since I could not use First, I registered F.Last on Wikipedia (also at the time these were separate wikis, there was no reason to choose the same name). I just renamed to a more neutral pseudo in the process of SUL finalization (see meta:Steward requests/Username changes/2014-09#Jborme@global)
    • The contributions on WT-en relate to my native language, my birth country and birth city, for which I can provide proof if needed. I also contributed to the page fr:Toulon at the time (2007-2009), showing similar interests.

    If you need copy of e-mails or any other documents just let me know. Cæruleum (talk) 12:29, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

    I'm afraid we've recently lost the ability to do user merges on this wiki, a necessary step to allow the WMF to move everyone to a global single-user login (SUL) for all WMF wikis. You will need to go to m:Steward requests/Username changes and see if the Stewards can help. However, you should be aware that the above information may not be enough to verify your ownership of the old account. Should that be the case, it's not the end of the world if you have contributions under two different account names; I realize it's a frustration, but I hope you'll continue to contribute under your new name! Really I just want the page deleted. Is there a separate process for that or do I go to the same place? -Branddobbe (talk) 20:55, 5 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
    You're in luck; since User:(WT-en) Branddobbe links to your Wikipedia page, and I can verify that your Wikipedia and Wikivoyage accounts are linked, we consider that sufficient proof that you own the old WT page. I will delete it for you. Powers (talk) 21:45, 5 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
    Welcome back, by the way; I hope you stick around and contribute some more travel knowledge! Powers (talk) 21:47, 5 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

    Hi, Kenneth. I'm afraid we no longer have the ability to perform these user merges. You can still participate here on the Wiki! And we can adjust User:(WT-en) Kenneth Nielsen to point to your new username if you like. If you're very keen on the merge, however, my best suggestion is for you to go to m:Steward requests/Username changes and place a request there. Powers (talk) 00:07, 28 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
    Hi Powers, I think the easiest solution would be to adjust User:(WT-en) Kenneth Nielsen to point to my new username User:Kenneth.Nielsen and then be done with it. Thanks for the update. 11:52, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
    Okay, I've redirected the page to your new user page and left a note there explaining why. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see you contributing more in the future! You might want to link Special:Contributions/(WT-en) Kenneth Nielsen on your new user page so people can find your old contributions. Powers (talk) 20:19, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
